What's a good beer to go with whiskey?

I don’t drink much liquor, but I’m trying to broaden my pallette as a[n] (infrequent, thank you) social drinker. I guess the next (and possibly last) bottle I need for my liquor cabinet is a big ol’ standard bottle of black label Jack Daniels.

Since I can’t stand sour mix, and I don’t like whiskey and coke, I figure I might as well sip it out of a shot glass, accompanied by a glass of beer, like a real man.

Anybody have any suggestions for a beer that’ll go good with it?

Chumbawumba suggests a lager.

Or you could get a bottle of good whiskey, and sip it straight. (Sorry. I’m not a big fan of Jack.) Try Knob Creek, Booker’s, Old Weller Antique (personal choice), or even Gentleman Jack. If it isn’t going into a mixed drink, get good sipping whiskey.

A favorite order of mine in my heavier drinking days was to get a “Budweiser and a Bushmills”.

If I was drinking good beer or good whiskey, I wouldn’t get them together.

That would explain the old Pittsburgh favorite, Imperial and Iron City. This was commonly ordered as an “Imp 'n Arn”.

Have you tried Jack Daniels on the rocks? That’s usually how I enjoy cheaper bourbons, since I don’t like mixing them very much.

Just to be clear, Jack Daniels is not bourbon.

Sounds like the Teeming Millions want to know: are you going to be doing whiskey shots with beer chasers, or depth charges?

Esquire magazine ran an article on this in the May issue (which is worth picking up just for Eva Longoria and pages 110-113). They suggest these pairings:

  1. Brooklyn Lager and Old Overholt Rye Whiskey
  2. Old Speckled Hen and Glenlivet 18
  3. Budweiser and Suntory Yamakazi
  4. Holsten and George Dickel No. 12
  5. Guiness and Powers Irish Whiskey
  6. Anchor Liberty Ale and Laphroaig Cask Strength

Of those, I think George Dickel is the closest and they use Holsten as an example of a German lager available in the states. In which case you might try Warsteiner as something similar.

Finally, a point made by the author, David Wondrich “Every beer goes with every whiskey (there are no pairing that will make you look bad, especially if you’re sitting next to someone drinking an apple martini), but some do go better than others.”

Personally, I like a good shot of scotch with a nice dark beer (if I’m not going too expensive, I’ll have Glenlivet 12 and a Mackeson Triple Stout).

BF like this combination too. Damnit, what was I thinking, teaching him to like scotch? I think I liked it better when I had the bottle all to myself

While we’re at it, grill me up a nice steak to go with the whole mess!

You, too? I made the mistake of introducing the wife, who up until then drank Bud Light and Dewar’s, to the joys of real beer and single-malts. Then I compounded the error by letting her taste my small-batch bourbons. Alas, alack…

For some reson, I think Jameson’s and Fat Tire go together pretty well. Maybe because they’re both so sweet…

Try a shot of 16 year Lagavulin followed by Dead Guy Rogue Ale. Yum. Or, you could just drink the Lagavulin and forget the beer.
