Of course, one of the themes of the show has always been that in Texas, sports take precedent above all else. But two recent episodes were almost scary. First, the one with Peg substitute-teaching the football phenom who did no work at all. She failed him, getting him disqualified, and was persecuted for it. It made me think that in her shoes, I would have backed down, not thinking my credibility, and personal safetly, were worth the academic rating of someone who didn’t give a rat’s ass anyway. Although I also had to wonder, couldn’t the administration just have ignored the F and let him play anyway?
Now, I finally got around to watching last week’s episode, and it has Bobby being the team mascot (middle school), then running off the field because he won’t submit to the tradition of getting beat up by the opponents’ marching band. For that, he gets harassed by everyone, including at least one adult.
What are they getting at? I got the football-is-religion-in-Texas message long ago. Well, I was aware of it long before KOTH. But are these stories supposed to be funny? Or could they be a round-about way of showing how unhealthy fanatacism is? I dunno. I think there are just too many people who will take this at face value.
Just giving this a bump. I don’t know what tonight’s episode is going to be, but I hope to heck it’s not another sports-related one.
I don’t know if you need to worry, Rilchiam, about people taking it at face value.
The kind of people who would do that don’t watch KoTH in the first place, because they don’t understand (or appreciate) the humor and they don’t “get” satire. For them, KoTH is a cartoon, and cartoons are for kids.
I’m ashamed to admit that I was very late to appreciating the Simpsons and South Park, just because of the crude way they were drawn and animated.
Just my two cents.
[slight hijack] I can only see KotH on AFKN (armed forces Korea network)… the last episode they showed was several months ago, when Peggy seemingly DIED while parachuting…
Someone tell me, DID she actually die? If not, how did the writer’s explain her living?? [/hijack]
Peggy didn’t die. She landed in something soft (like a swamp, can’t remember for sure) and spent most of the season in a full body cast.
Thank you, AuntiePam! That’s been bugging me for the past few months!!
I wish AFKN would start showing KotH again…
She spent the first ep in a body cast, then another being rehabbed by Cotton. KOTH has some continuity; not what a live-action show would have, but not utterly non-continuity like the Simpsons. Like, they showed Luann’s hair growing out, but by the time it was back to normal, DeDe was still pregnant. IOW, they follow up on things, but only as it suits the story.
