"What's that on your head? A wig!"

I notice from the link that it is “a hair enhancer designed … to add volume.” Just what we need. Eve with more volume.

I dunno. I will let you in on my Big Hairy Adventures when it arrives. As far as extensions, I want to make my hair shorter! If this do looks really good on me, I’ll get my hair cut.

Like handing Ethel Merman a microphone . . .

Ohmygod Eve I had no idea I was overlapping thread topics on you. I’d had the OP for “Nice hat! What is that, Beaver?” jotted on an Outlook sticky for almost a week before I got around to posting it. And I hadn’t seen this thread when I finally did.

I like the dark choice too, but don’t wigs get old and flat and dull after a while? I mean, they don’t replenish, like real hair, right? So I’d advise you to budget for semin annual replacement, in order to avoid looking like the lady on my bus in the morning, whose appears to have a beige bathmat strapped on to her head by a Vera scarf. The scarf is tied on in such a way as to give the distinct impression that its ONLY function is to keep the wig from sliding sideways when the bus takes a sudden turn.

I thought I’d offer some alternative suggstions, Eve; just to make sure you’ve considered all of your options before you make any final decisions.

Um, ew? Sorry; hit the space, apparently, instead of the backspace, to cover up my typo’ed n. Should be semiannual.

You know, Eve, this sort of turn of phrase makes me want to marry you . . .

My cousin, who covers her hair with one of these (you’ll recall the whole Orthodox women covering their hair thread a while back) showed me hers recently. Imagine a yarmulke (who invented that spelling, anyway?), like some Jewish men wear, a black circular thing 4-5 inches in diameter. It’s not a ‘Jewish Army Helmet’ like that on the Happy Jewish Man smiley, it’s one that sits flat against the top of the head. Now use that as the basis for a wig, the thing you attach the hair to, instead of the usual netting and cloth. You can bobby pin the yarmulke to your regular hair, and it will sit very comfortably on top of your head. It doesn’t provide as much coverage as a regular wig, but it’s apparently much more comfortable. My cousin loves hers.

As far as human vs. synthetic - synthetic doesn’t wear out as quickly, and is much cheaper. Human looks more natural, and styles more like, well, human hair. If you wear a human hair wig daily, I’m told you have to replace it about every other year, but these might have to be replaced more often since some of your own hair will be matching, and you’ll want the color to match. (Hair fades in the sun - my hair is pretty long, and the ends are several shades lighter and redder than the top.) If you look, you can see this on most women who wear falls (3/4 or more of a wig, but missing the front - you use your own hairline, either with a headband of some sort to hide the beginning of the wig, or by leaving the front hair out and then pulling it back over the wig to make a half pony or something). Their falls have faded a bit, but their hair comes out of their scalps the same color it always did, so the fall’s a shade or two lighter.

The non-Jewish people on campus here (where there are plenty of married Orthodox women who cover their hair) have mostly noticed all the headbands, but have no idea why they’re so popular. It’s fun explaining. ;j

I think you can use extensions to add fullness. You just cut them shorter. I’m thinking about doing it.

One of my good friends wears a wig on a regular basis. Nobody notices unless they are really looking closely, so no worries there. Although she’d warn you it might get a tad uncomfortable in the heat.

I was thinking about that–especially if I keep my hair long and tied up under it. Then I remembered, women wore hats all year round for hundreds of years–if they can do it, so can I!

I once had a hairdresser explain to me that women needed to suffer to be beautiful. I gave up trying for beautiful.

But I’m already suffering like hell, and I’m barely presentable!

I’d pay good money to see Eve wearing this one.
