Kinda falls inline with what you asked, the “Shadows of Heliopolis” mod for Neverwinter Nights. Starts off slow, but escalates to pure hack and slash towards the end with many options.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Counter-Strike a fan-made mod of Half-Life?

I also liked the Antioch Chronicles for Starcraft.
The Jailbreak mod for UT2K4.
It kind of plays like your standard team deathmatch. But when you frag someone, they go to your jail. Each team has at least one “release point” that, if a member of the opposing team gets there, will release their imprisoned team-mates. If you land in jail, you can watch your teammates through ports, wail on the other prison bitches with your shield gun, or sometimes you’ll be teleported to a special arena to fight an imprisoned opponent for your freedom.
It’s coolness.
