E.T. and Titanic.
I’m not so sure about critically acclaimed, but I have sitting in my Netflix queue Fight Club and The Usual Suspects, which I’ve never heard a bad word about either but have yet to see.
I haven’t seen very many on that list, but the one that pops out at me is Bladerunner.
Does **Brokeback Mountain ** count?
oops. Misread the ‘never’ in the title.
Haven’t seen that one either, and probably won’t.
Responding to others (stuff I’ve seen):
Blade Runner (and for that matter, Alien): I sought these out b/c imdb.com rated them very highly. In all fairness, 1) special effects have improved since their release, and 2) they may have been more dramatic on a big screen. My experience: don’t bother.
Fight Club: pissed me off, felt cheated.
Deer Hunter: Rocked. But it isn’t the kind of movie you can watch more than, say, once a year. Emotionally draining.
E.T.: People say it’s a great movie but I never saw it. If I had kids, I wouldn’t show it to them for one reason. At one point, one character calls the other one “penis breath.” So totally unnecessary to introduce that concept into a “children’s film.” WTF was Spielberg thinking?
Godfather: imdb.com’s #1 ranked film of all time. I liked it very much.
Chinatown: oh, that was a great movie?
I viewed many of these based on imdb.com and the general consensus. I wonder if I had such high hopes that I didn’t give them a fair chance. OTOH I was hoping to like them, so go figure.
Ilsa leaves, Rhett leaves, and it’s a sled.
This pisses me off so much. Not because it’s a “spoiler” - it’s a mild one at best - but because the movie isn’t about Rosebud! I know you were probably just making a joke but the vast majority of the people who say this missed the point.
Kane changed my life. I’m passionate about it.
Singin’ in the Rain.
I haven’t seen a single Star Wars movie. I’ve been meaning to work through those. But I’m not big on sci-fi/fantasy movies. Up until about two years ago, I hadn’t seen a single James Bond movie.
Citizen Kane…I’ll have to rewatch someday, I didn’t really get much out of it.
I’ve only seen 7 of them. And one, Blade Runner, I fell asleep while watching, so we’ll say 6 and 1/2.
I’ve been meaning to watch a lot of the movies on that list for a long time, but I just never get around to it. I’ve never seen The Godfather, so I guess that would be my answer to the original question.
Add me to the list for The Godfather. It’s certainly my kind of movie – I love everything it inspired – I’d just never gotten around to seeing it, and whenever I do get the opportunity, I figure I’ll just “save it” until such a time as I feel I really need to see something great.
According to the original AFI Top 100 List - I think I’ve seen about 40 of those movies - the best movie I’ve never seen is Lawrence of Arabia. Their newly-revised list, which I just discovered, says it’s Singing in the Rain. By popular acclaim, I think the best movie I’ve never seen is It’s a Wonderful Life. I’ve seen bits of that one, but not all of it.
Philadelphia, Schindler’s List & Saving Private Ryan. I know…I know. I just think I would have to be in a particular emotional state to be able to absorb these three, and I’ve never been able to get there.
VCNJ~
Using the 10th anniversary AFI 100 films list, the best movie I’ve never seen is Raging Bull, but I am not racing out to rectify that, as I find Scorsese and I don’t get along well. The best movie I haven’t seen and lament not having seen is Lawrence of Arabia, but I just don’t want to see that on a small screen for the first time, so I’m waiting until I can catch it at a festival sometime.
The Green Mile
Shane
Saving Private Ryan
Brokeback Mountain
Cold Mountain
Batman Begins.
If I remember correctly, I’ve never seen Rashomon.
Also never seen Ghandi.
I’ve seen 53 of those.
Heh.
Just off the top of my head, I have yet to see:
Goodfellas
Mean Streets
The Big Lebowski
The Way We Were
