Pennsylvania gets my vote as the worst. How could they screw this up so badly? The state outline is bad enough, but the center piece is the statue “Commonwealth”, that sits on top of the capital building in Harrisburg. Most people in Pennsylvania have never seen the statue, and I don’t know if anyone outside of Harrisburg (or for that matter outside Pennsylvania) would connect the statue with PA. How about the Liberty Bell? Or Independence Hall? Maybe Gettysburg? Hell, I think a Steeler emblem taking up the entire reverse side would have been a better choice.
I like Connecticut and Rhode Island. Vermont is pretty ugly
Statequarters.com has some of the prospective designs. I dug through their archives and came up with some in particular:
[ul][]Any guesses what Iowa’s candidates are? []Texas is not bad, all lone star based. []Michigan just sucks, with an overly complicated state outline and little tiny Model T’s. []WisconsinFlorida[/ul]This page has a lot more (past) rejected designs.
You’ve got that right. I spent the first 19 years of my life living just ten miles from Harrisburg, and I didn’t know what the hell that was on the back of the quarter. Not exactly a famous, or even memorable, statue.
Hrm… I bet it is because the liberty bell and independence hall were done in the bicentennial coin series (as I recall). Still, you’re right… they could have come up with something better.
