Remember when he had the waiter at Ted’s who was kicking out people who paid for the salad bar and piled it on and couldn’t finish their salads? Priceless satire. And the cadet who wanted to be able to give up in the middle of battle and be choppered out if he wanted to, great stuff.
His interviews of the guy who killed his pregnant wife in Modesto were priceless too.
He’s done several of those and they’re all great. I miss his show, I listened to it every night when I lived in Detroit. That was the first time I was exposed to FM talk radio, they had a station up there. We have a station here in Columbia, but it airs Jim Kramer and then Micheal Savage during the time that Leykis’ show airs. At least they go to Hendrie’s show after Savage, otherwise the whole lineup would be political talk…well, they have Art Bell, but that’s humour right? I mean, nobody actually takes Coast-to-Coast AM seriously do they? He does the whole thing as a joke right?
I have to agree!! They still are “wicked funny” - I believe they just celebrated their 20th (or was it 25th) anniversary with 94.7 WFBQ here in Indy. Check 'em out!! www.bobandtom.com
And then look under comedy. Some of it may be a little too dependent on references to British culture, but I defy anyone to listen to ‘Just a Minute’ and not be amused. Other highlights include Dead Ringers, The Write Stuff and The 99p Challenge. Hope you enjoy!
I love Matt Drudge’s radio show…it’s just him and a mic rappin’ at ya for a couple hours.
My favorites were the WNEW crew-which all went downhill after Opie&Anthony got canned. Ferral with sports in the morning was great, and Ron&Fez were usually very funny. But OnA defintely had the monopoly on wild ass radio gags. Plus, Anthony could do the most insane impersonations. Anyone else here miss them/hate them? There is basically no talk radio to listen to anymore on FM.
The Big Show with John Boy and Billy. It’s southern and redneck and funny. I don’t live in the south anymore, so it’s not on in my area. I haven’t heard it since Nov. 2001. I wish they would come here. There are other markets in the north they are in, all the way up to Wisconsin and Michigan, but nothing in Columbus.
Funniest Old Time Radio show: “The Fred Allen Show” was hilarious, if somewhat dated. Other likes of mine include “It Pays To Be Ignorant”, “Bob and Ray”, and “The Stan Freberg Show”.
(Note: I don’t listen to foreign radio, so I can’t comment on the BBC.)
Phil Hendrie, without a doubt. My favorite “guests” are Steve Bozell, the guy who sues everyone, Floyd, the Korean war vet, and that one “cadet” at the military school(whos name escapes me).
I don’t really care for Bobbie Doolie or Ted Bell. What about Doug Danger, the gay man and gay journalist!
Phil Hendrie is more consistently funny, but Adam Carolla in peak form destroys anyone else I’ve heard. The problem with Loveline is that I get pissed off at these kids that call up “Yeah, uhh hi. Well, to celebrate my Jr. High graduation, my girlfriend and I shot some smack, then did anal, and I was wondering if I should show my buddies the video?”
How can nobody have mentioned Jay Santos, head of the Citizen’s Auxillary (sp?) Police when speaking of Hendrie’s “guests”? And, Hermann Cheruscan Doug Danger is a gay man and gay journalist?? He needs to be more clear about that! Just for kicks, Google “Doug Danger” and you get some stuntman/daredevil guy, then think about the gay journalist…
While they’re not quite the same type of humor, I’m a fan (at least used to be, haven’t heard the shows in a while) of both Car Talk, which is nice because you can get some actual useful info from it, and Prarie Home Companion, though the news from Lake Wobegon can be a bit depressing at times.
Phil Hendrie is awesome–back when I lived in California, I used to listen to his show every night–he got syndicated around the same time that I moved to Utah, so I was enthused to be able to hear him every night still. ^.^
Favorite guests:
R.C. “Great show as always, Phil!” Collins (pre-military cadet days)
Bud “What you laugh at?!” Dickman
Steve “…tryin’ to make me look like a fool!” Bozell
Lloyd “Back in Korea…” Bonafide
David G. “-DO IT!-” Hall
Just goes to show you, everybody likes something different.
I can’t STAND Tom Leykis at all. I’m pretty thick skinned. I don’t mind just about any racist/sexist/whatever-ist joke as long as it’s funny, and not meant seriously. I mean, I love South Park and such. But this guy is so incredibly misogynistic and you can tell he means it. It’s just sickening (and boring) to listen to. And his voice reminds me of Rush Limbaugh for some reason.
I listen to Stern avidly every morning. He’s definately not as wild and crazy as he once was, and lots of people do his shtick now, but he still consistently makes me laugh.
I like Don & Mike a lot. It’s a shame we don’t get them here anymore. Their sidekick Buzz cracks me up with practically every word out of his mouth. He’s like this stately old-radio kinda guy (or at least seems that way to me) and here he is talking about porn and such. Funny.
Opie and Anthony took some getting used to. At first I thought they were just immature Stern rip-offs. But since there really wasn’t anything else on in the drive-time, I listened. And they grew on me, a lot. Very funny guys. A shame that they pushed the line a little too far. Hope ther come back soon.
As for Ron & Fez, I couldn’t stand them (ok, mainly Fez’s voice) until O&A got sacked. Then they filled the void for a while. Mainly good at eliciting humor from their callers, rather than being funny themselves. Sadly, the void is now back.
I don’t know if you were implying that Tom is racist or sexist, but if you scrutinize his statements, you’d come to the realization that he is neither.
I was implying sexist, not racist. Like I said, I’m normally all for a good joke, no matter who it might offend. I think people in general are usually too thin-skinned. (I did mention I listened to Howard Stern and Opie & Anthony, who are also criticized for being racist/sexist.)
I did give him a try, I really did. But after a couple weeks went by and every time I tuned in, he still seemed to be talking about how women are all money-grubbing, manipulative bitches, I came to the decision that he’s a one-trick-pony, with a problem with women. I’ll concede that maybe it’s all just a well-done act, but it came off way too fervent to dismiss. Maybe I caught him in a bad month. I dunno. Can’t find out now, since WNEW yanked all their talk shows and went to filler music until the “new station” premeires in the Spring.
