What's the furthest north, south, east and west you've been?

North - Barrow Alaska
South - (?? Not sure which, but…) Either San Antonio Texas or Baton Rouge Louisiana
East - Washington DC
West - LA or San Fran, whichever is furthest West

Oh Rats, cahnge my West to HI, it’s further west than CA, darn, I’m not very good at this

N - Copenhagen, Denmark 55:53:03N
E - Naples, Italy 14:22:23E
S - Acapulco, Mexico 16:52:04S
W - Reno, Nevada 119:52:46W

Guess I don’t win anything.

N - Reykjavik, Iceland 64N
S - Grenada (Caribbean) 12N
E - Tokyo, Japan 139E
W - Kauai, HI 159W

This summer, I’ll be rafting the Kongakut River through the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, so my new “furthest North” will be something above 69N. I really have to start working on the Southern Hemisphere, though!

North: Chugiak, Alaska 61:24N, 149:27W
East: Narita, Japan 35:48N, 140:21E
South : Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia 8:40S, 115:09E
West: Hanapepe, Kuwai, Hawaii 21:54N, 159:35W

East and West are figured using strict longitude – farthest from the prime meridian. If you figure it as the farthest I’ve traveled around the globe from home, Bali is as far heading west, and Bangor, Maine (44:48N, 68:45W) is the farthest east.

North: St. Paul, Minnesota.
West: San Francisco, California.
South: Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
East: Prague, Czeck Republic.

Next summer could possibly include a trip to Australia, however, and that should put a dent in at least two of those numbers.

N - near Usti nad Labem, Czech Rep.
S - somewhere in San Diego, Cal.
E - near Budapest, Hungary
W - corner of Lincoln Blvd & Santa Monica Blvd in Santa Monica, Cal.

North: Vancouver, BC 49n17

East and South: Tanzania, Africa 7s47 35e41

Oahu, Hawaii: 158w0

N: Fairbanks, Alaska
S: Ponce, Puerto Rico
E: Venice, Italy
W: Anchorage, Alaska

North - Frobisher Bay, Baffin Island, Canada
South - Probably Fort Walton Beach, FL.
East - Salzburg, Austria.
West - Vancouver Island, Canada

North: Petawawa, Ontario, Canada
West and South: Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, US
East: Newark, New Jersey, US.

That’s what I meant alright. For example, I think some flights from the eastern US to Japan go to very high latitudes but I don’t think watching a movie and having a drink on board entitles you to be mentioned in the same breath as Ranulph Fiennes.

The current state of play is:

Furthest North: lieu at Point Barrow, Alaska, USA (I’m guessing it’s slightly further north than Barrow - let me know if I’m wrong, CanvasShoes)

Furthest South: Colibri at Stewart Island, New Zealand

Furthest East and West: A tie between Colibri and pipper at Taveuni, Fiji.

lieu has the greatest latitudinal spread at 109°06’ but all CanvasShoes has to do to claim that prize is jump on a plane to New Zealand. Go on, you know you want to;).

North: John O’Groats, Scotland (58:38N)
South: Sydney, Australia (33:52S)
East: Suva, Fiji (139:48E)
West: Los Angeles (118:24W)

Crossing the IDL sort of messes up the east-West thing. Japan–>Australia–> Fiji–>Los Angeles, US…

You’re right on Two counts, (at least IIRC), Pt Barrow is further north than the Village of Barrow. And I would LOOOOOVE to visit NZ!!!

Also, thanks for providing the lat/longs. I’ll take a look at my maps and see where all the northern bases are in relation to each other, that’s how I came to visit that far north, as part of an environmental project for part of the DoD. (there are: Point Barrow, Point Lay, Point Hope, tons of White Alice and Dewpoint sites all along that area, to tell the truth, I’ve forgotten which were where as far as north/east/west).

Aro,

I think you’re doing yourself an injustice with the longitude of Suva - I think it’s about 178°E.

Is Point Barrow further north that Tuktoyaktuk or Iqaluit? (Iqaluit is the current name of Frobisher Bay, now that it’s the capital of Nunavut.)

Ok, my westernmost location is actually in The Orient (Asia, if you prefer), which is considered the Far East, but I flew west to get there, so:

If you count Japan as West (since I flew west to get there), then…

North: London, England.
South: Whichever is south-er, Ocho Rios, Jamaica or Georgetown, Grand Cayman Island.
West: Kashiwazaki, Japan.
East: [consults map of Europe] Looks like Naples, Italy.

If you count Japan as East, then…

North & Sotuh: Same as above.
West: San Francisco, California.
East: Whichever is east-er, Tokyo, Japan or Osaka, Japan.

Point Barrow is a lot further north than Iqaluit (thanks for the update on that). It’s at 71°, whereas Iqaluit is at 63°. Tuktoyaktuk is at 69°.

The name was changed long before it became the capital. It confused us. A lot of the settlement names have been changed back to their original names.

Inuvik is the furthest north I’ve been, it’s further north than both Tuk and Iqaluit, although I never think of it that way.

In fact, as far as I can work out, the only permanent settlement north of Point Barrow would be on Svalbard, Norway. Obviously people may have journeyed to the far northern Canadian islands or northern Greenland but there’s bugger all people living there.
