Simply enough, this thread posits three questions (you might have guessed which ones by now):
What’s the furthest you’ve ever been from your birthplace?
What’s the furthest you’ve ever lived from your birthplace?
What’s the furthest you’ve ever been from your place of residence during the time you were there?
Please include relevant place names, distance, driving distance, etc., as you see fit.
My answers:
5855 mi (9422 km) from Capitol-area Maryland to the Golan Heights, Israel (distance may be fudged a little as I don’t remember the name of the city I was in when I was the farthest away–I think I was at Kibbutz Hagoshrim–anyone know which city that would be?)
2271 mi (3654 km) from Capitol-area Maryland to San Diego, CA.
7567 mi (12177 km) from San Diego to Israel (see disclaimer in #1).
Furtherest I’ve been from my birthplace in Victoria, Australia is Inverness, Scotland - 10573.0 miles (17015km).
Furtherest I’ve lived from my birthplace is 29 miles (46km), but that was for a very brief time. Furtherest I’ve lived from my birthplace for an extended time is 8 miles (12km) in a neighboring town.
As my birthplace is my place of residence, my answer is the same as in question 1.
The farthest I have been from home is at the Mayan ruins near Merida, Mexico, located on the Yucatan peninsula. This was in 1987 when I was on a trip to Mexico with my Spanish class in my junior year of high school. As my birthplace is only about 20 miles from the area where I live now and have lived since I was born, the different answers for the three questions is negligible.
To expand on my disclaimer in answer #1, does anyone know how I could go about finding what city I was in? Googling “Kibbutz Hagoshrim” isn’t much help. I just remember that at one point I was standing on top of the Golan Heights and there was a sign showing the distance to the capitals of various countries*, and I could’ve thrown a rock into Lebanon and then spun around and thrown another rock into Syria if I wanted to.
*Now that I think about it, I can probably find the distance from DC to that point if I look at the pictures I took. I’ll have to see if I can find them.
All distances are approximate since I don’t know how to calculate the exact distance.
