What's the least sucky free webhosting option?

I asked on a thread a while back about webhosting options for a personal website that’s about to be cut off (it’s on an academic server). All of the opinions given were for pay sites. Very cheap, to be sure, but still pay.

I know that most, if not all, free options are pretty crappy. But what I’d like to ask is, which is the least crappy? I’d like to put my site there until my financial situation straightens out, and/or I figure out exactly where I want to put my site.

Thanks!

I was always happy with 50megs.com

Otherwise, look on google for something like ‘free webhost comparision’ and make sure you read reviews people leave. If something looks suspicious don’t go with them (like unlimited bandwidth or no ads - both are often either lies or have strings attached) I’ll repeat this though: read other peoples reviews as you search. Save yourself some grief.

I transferred my personal site from an academic server to one hosted by the Super Dimension Fortress. A one-time donation to this public unix access system gave me 100MB webspace, a shell account, an e-mail address with IMAP and POP3 support, and many other features I haven’t yet begun to explore. The webspace is plenty big enough to archive journals from the past three years, along with the other typical content you’d expect on a personal site. As the months go by, the one-time donation eventually starts to look more cost-effective than a subscription service (maybe not a free web host, but it’s nice not to be forced to inflict banner ads on your audience).
