What's the most interesting car you saw today?

A VW Vanagon pick-up/utility

Mine, with the alternator going out on Airline Dr in Metairie, LA. Kind of a busy street.

Walking thru a parking lot a couple hours ago I spotted a full blown American Graffiti-style T-Bird … but … it wasn’t. It was the model put out in 2002-2005. Just like the blue one on the Wikipedia page. It’s those big ugly taillights that just ruin it.

I’ve wanted one of these (or a Corvair version) for years, but the rust issues have always scared me off. I think one would make a great motorcycle hauler.

Out for a bike ride this morning I passed a mid 1960s Dodge Coronet station wagon. It was done up as a rat rod, complete with a stuffed deer head sticking out of the rear window.

Looking back at my last few posts in this thread it looks like it’s been a string of 1960s Mopar sightings for me.

Tonight, a Mitsubishi 3000 GT. It looked to be in mint condition. It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly 20 years since they last made those. Remember the 1990s, back when Mitsubishi actually made some cool cars and not just bargain priced subcompacts and CUVs?

A Toyota FJ Cruiser covered in astroturf. Very distinctive.

This was actually last week, but I was in New York for Christmas last week and wasn’t following this board much. I flew into JetBlue’s Terminal 5 at JFK, which is adjacent to the historic Eero Saarinen designed TWA Flight Center, which has recently been renovated and repurposed as a hotel. I decided to walk over and check it out before heading into the city. They have a whole 1960s theme going on, including a bank of rotary pay phones, and some vintage cars parked around the place to add to the period feel. Inside in the lobby was a mid 1960s Chrysler Newport (I suppose a New Yorker would have been a little on the nose). Out front was a '60s Lincoln Continental convertible, parked as if it were dropping off a guest. But the most interesting, in the parking lot was a Citroën Traction Avant, a car I don’t believe I’ve actually seen in person before. I guess they wanted to add some international flair. (At least I assumed the Traction Avant was one of the hotel’s displays, but looking at my photos that car had a valid New York license plate, so it’s possible it just belonged to a visitor.)

A stretch limo pickup truck (Dodge Ram), turning a corner very carefully on a post-snow Monday evening.

A red Jeep Gladiator pickup, in front of a fire station. I think that look is an acquired taste.

I saw a 2018 911 GT2 RS last week. There’s a Porsche dealer on my way to work, and I’ve seen innumerable Caymans, Macans and Cayennes around there, plus occasional Turbos and GT3s, but I’ve never seen a GT2 anywhere before. I recognized it instantly even though I could only see it from a rear-three-quarter angle, with another vehicle directly behind it; the diffuser quickly sets it apart from the GT3 RS.

A Mitsubishi Delica Chamonix van, parked in front of an REI. Cool vehicle for the outdoorsy folk.

Today I Parked a Suburban with a thru-and-thru bullet hole.

In the passenger-side rear quarter panel, through the plastic interior panel, through the back seal and out the driver side rear door.

One bullet, two holes, as big around as my pinky finger.

(Caliber=?)

Battle scars are cool.

This morning I saw an Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera station wagon, in quite good condition considering that car has been out of production for 24 years. And nice to see an actual station wagon on the road rather than the ubiquitous CUVs of today.

Haven’t seen one of these in long long while…

Ford Granada 4-door. Brown with a tan vinyl top. I’m guessing later 70’s, as it had square headlights. Refreshing to see a 70s car among traffic today, though brown is the most insipid car color ever IMO. Shockingly square-ish by today’s standards, but really, remarkably compact compared to many of today’s vehicles; it really stood out for it’s diminutive-mess…land-yacht reputation of 70s cars notwithstanding.

The Fox Body - not one of the more beloved generations of Mustang, to be sure, although I’d drive the shit out of an SSP with a 5-speed and the torquiest engine they could put in one.

For my money the coolest Ford car from that era was the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe and I don’t know why they didn’t make THAT one the police interceptor. I saw a black-on-black Turbo Coupe, absolutely cherry condition, at a car show a few months ago. Trust me, pictures are one thing, but up close in person it just looks EVIL.

I pulled up next to an older Ford Ranger at a stop light because I saw a tail out the window and wanted to get a look at the dog. The steering wheel had a suicide knob, I don’t think I’ve seen one of those in years.

Yesterday we got onto the freeway behind a nice-looking Morris Mini.

I was behind a yellow Ford Pinto this morning, looked like it was in good shape too.

So Ferrari introduced theRoma for 2020. Beautiful, sure. But did the world really need another Jaguar F-Type or AM DB11.
