What's the most interesting car you saw today?

It’s been a parade of beauties heading to the car wash for detailing today. It must be spring. 3 varieties of Mustang, 2 of Corvette, and a Dodge Challenger and a couple of recent Chargers. I heard the Lotus Elise, but didn’t see it. Heaven knows what I might have missed while vacuuming.

  • A white, '65-ish Mustang with the top down (twice);
  • A desert-tan, civilian-registered HMMWV (once);
  • A chrome-plated (with matte-black hood) Mercedes-Benz (twice).

Walking to the store earlier today I saw an older XJ Jeep Cherokee. Those things used to be everywhere, but you don’t see them very often anymore, and when you do see them they’re usually lifted and have big off road tires. This is the first one I’ve seen in a long time that looked completely stock. And this looked like a fairly early one, with chrome bumpers instead of the body colored ones they used on the later ones.

I have a '99 Cherokee Sport I bought new. I drove it to the hardware store (three times) today, then Mrs. L.A. and I went to Beach Cat Brewery (too crowded), Dratron Harbor Oyster Company (to crowded), and finally to the Mexican place. Completely stock.

A first or second generation Mazda RX-7, probably 2nd but they’re difficult to tell apart at quick glance. Either way, a 30+ year old car. I wonder if that’s the original engine.

A 5th generation (1967-69) Ford Thunderbird 4 door with rear suicide doors.

So the Teslas are delivered to the dealership on large flatbed trucks. Haha.

I thought they’d arrive, I dunno, on maglev platforms or dropped from space or something.

They used to be teleported in, but the FTC was worried about the tax implications.

I see truckloads of them quite frequently. The local dealership is just up the highway. They must be selling well.

I couple of cars from the past few days:

  • A Model T Ford, chugging down Main St on the warm day earlier in the week.
  • A Bentley Continental
  • A Pontiac Aztek, post restyle, looked pretty good to me
  • Some old Pontiac 4 door from the 1960s, but couldn’t identify it

Waze sent me on a helluva detour Thursday, and I saw a 1961(?) GMC pickup. Same colour as the one in the link, but heavily oxidised. Looked like the original paint. It had a period camper in the bed; tall, but did not overhang the bed, and the trim in the same colour as the truck. It was parked behind a business, and looked to have been there a long time.

I only saw it from the rear, but I am pretty sure I saw a Ford Model A coupe today.

Last week I saw a dark blue Model A on the road near our house. When I got onto the freeway, I saw a chartreuse Model A on a flatbed truck.

A few more I saw on my walk:

The front of a mid-1950s Chrysler (or maybe a Dodge) peeking out from a garage.

A Dodge A100 van that looked like it was still being used as a work truck. I’ve seen that one around the neighborhood before.

A very heavily modified 1980s Chevy pickup, with the roof removed to turn it into a convertible (Or maybe it was a K5 Blazer with the roof removed) and rear seats installed in the bed. It had big off road tires and was painted bright yellow.

I was having a heart-to-heart with an old friend outside a coffee place. He’d just told me what a tough time his sister’s having when “Hey, an ID-4! Oh, sorry… but that’s VW’s modular electric platform… I’ve been reading about it for years, and didn’t expect to see one in the wild yet! Whoa… So, how’s your sister handling whatever-you-were-telling-me?”

I believe this is a 1965-66 AMC Rambler Classic 2-door convertible. Parked in a driveway less than 1/4 mile from our house.

A red Ferrari California just drove past the window by my desk, with a ginger cat sticking its head out of the passenger window. That’s quite unusual…!

Although I said I see that sort of car fairly often on my way to the shops, usually they’re driving past on the busy main road. They hardly ever turn off into my road so nothing much that’s interesting usually goes past my window.

Yesterday on the way home I saw a shiny red 2000 Toyota Tacoma Extended Cab pickup.

What’s so interesting about that? I believe it was my wife’s truck. I forgot to look to see if it had a sprayed-in bedliner, but it did have window fairings and very dark tint on the windows. I couldn’t see inside to see if it had red hyacinth seat covers. The red paint was shiny and fresh-looking, unlike the faded paint on so many older red Toyotas. Finally, I saw it on the freeway near Alger, WA. The guy that bought it lives in Alger.

This afternoon I spotted this pickup truck: I identify as a Prius.

While getting the oil changed in my truck I was hanging out at the garage. Parked in their lot was a BMW Isetta.
