What's the most interesting car you saw today?

Tuesday on the way to work I saw what I think might have been a Tesla Model X. Whatever it was, it was orange and the license plate was Y-WING. The car had a narrow white stripe on the side. At the front was a silhouette of… an X-Wing.

This was mostly only interesting because of the situation. This car appears to have lost all it’s coolant while in the left lane, then very quickly (over the course of a 100-200 feet or so) made their way to the shoulder on the right. All four lanes were covered in whatever spilled out (again, probably coolant, didn’t look like oil). The way the passing cars spread it out, it looked like it had rained in just that area.
At least if it was a coolant, be it a bad hose, blown radiator, water pump etc, it’s probably cheap/easy fix.
Still a nice looking car though.

This morning I saw either a 1964 or 1965 Ford Thunderbird with a landau roof.

I kind of like the minimalist Swedish design. I mean, Volvo has pretty much always followed the “form follows function” design philosophy.

I finally saw the new Toyota electric car “bZ4X” in the wild. Stupidest name ever, but the car looks fine.

Oh, I’ll bet we can think up some competitors for that distinction. I’ll start:

  • XR4Ti
  • Edsel (regardless of the car’s perceived shortcomings, the name had to play a role in the reputation it gained.)
  • ID.Buzz (the new VW microbus)

And could have been worse.

ETA: “Varsity Stroke”? Good name for a NCAA golf parody.

I bet the Mini would totally fit inside the “mini” van.

I spotted a 1st generation (1999-2006) Honda Insight. I remember thinking Toyota was late to market with their Prius and that they were a day late and a dollar short. Oops.

I knew someone with one of those. The owner must have been in the 300-400lb range. I have no idea how he got in and out a car that was so small and low to the ground.
Last time I saw him, he had a Prius. At the very least, that must’ve been easier on his knees.

A friend in college, who was kind of a Honda fangirl, pooh-poohed the Prius when it first came out because it “only” got 50 mph versus the Insight’s 70 mpg or whatever it was. But that was exactly the thing that made the Insight unpopular – it did exactly one thing really well, at the expense of everything else. The Prius was the much more practical option for most people.

I think it’s a Ford Model A Tudor, but I’m not that familiar with the Fords of that era. It’s a two door, I could only take a photo when were stopped at a light and I was right behind it.

When I finally sold my '01 Insight, my Craigslist ad was titled “WHY the hell would you buy this car?”:

Sure, it gets amazing gas mileage, but that’s its one trick… not acceleration, not room for a family, or even picking up the in-laws at the airport.

Sure, these early Insights are a blast. It’s a cute, tiny two-seater … but so is a Miata. Stop reading this ad and go save up for one.

Etc, etc…

On Sunday I saw something labelled a “Targa”. It had a sort of T-top but-not-really thing.

Turns out it’s a Porsche style. Couldn’t say what year or anything. It seems to me like putting “Convertible” labels on a ragtop.

While waiting for a “walk” signal at a crosswalk earlier this afternoon, I saw a green early-50’s Studebaker Champion drive by.

Lotus Evora, I believe.

Saw this in my neighborhood this morning. I believe it’s a Model A with a leaking differential and interesting color choice on the wheels.

(Looking at some other pictures, maybe the wheel color isn’t entirely unprecedented. I do see others with bright green or yellow or whatever color rims. I guess I’m just used to seeing black and white pictures)

1967 VW Microbus at the recycling center (of course).

I was behind a 1965 Mustang convertible for a few blocks today (It said it was a '65 on the personalized license plate). I don’t usually find old Mustangs that interesting; they’re one of the most common classic cars in the US. But the thing that struck me about it was just how small it looked in modern traffic. I was driving my 2019 Miata, and it looked roughly the same size as my car. Without looking up their respective dimensions I’m not sure if it truly was close to the same size, or if it just looked that way from my perspective.
