What's the most interesting car you saw today?

I just got back from three days at the Barrett Jackson auction in Vegas so I don’t even know where to start.

Ok… I’ll limit it to ones I rode in… a Hell Cat will definitely pin you to the back of your seat.

A pristine looking 1955 DeSoto convertible.
Like this except it was blue and white.

A Volkswagen TDI.

For a serious answer, I saw many interesting cars at the SOVREN vintage races this weekend.

My favorites were a very quick 1961 356 Porsche and a 1966 Ford GT-40 - which sadly crashed into the wall at turn 9. No injuries but the front of the car was badly damaged.

A Studebaker pickup almost identical to this one.

A 1966 or so Lincoln Continental

I spent the weekend at the Rennsport Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. OMG, I have never seen so many fantastic cars at once. It was reputed to be the largest gathering of Porsches ever in North America. Everything from old bathtubs, the original Platypus, to the 919 was there. It was Porsche heaven.

2nd gen Buick Skylark (vintage 1961-1963), like this one: Buick Skylark - Wikipedia

Nice.

Porsche Platypus… had to see what those looked like: porsche platypus - Google Search. Cool.

A late 60’s Rambler 4-door. I only knew what it was because it said Rambler across the grill, I would never have known what it was otherwise.

1988 Buick LeSabre T-Type.

One of the things I miss about living in Ann Arbor was the abundance of test vehicles I would see. I saw several GM (Cadillac ELR, 2014 Impala) prototypes from someone who lived in the same apartment complex, and I worked in Chelsea by the Chrysler Proving Grounds, so I saw plenty of Chryslers (2014 Grand Cherokee, pre-production Charger Hellcat, an upcoming minivan or Durango/Grand Wagoneer).

I had a good chat with the owner of that car. He has several others. I am envious.

Saw a Slingshot downtown, probably trying to get one last drive in before the snow starts to fly here…<sob>.

Some big horking early 60s blue convertible was pulling into the gas station when I was pulling out. Didn’t have a chance to ID it since I was waaay too busy swerving to get out its way before it smashed into me. That thing seemed to have the turn radius of a semi.

Google image searching makes me guess Chevy Impala?

Today was a good car day.

There was a ragged looking Camero SS, early 70’s, being hauled on a car carrier. Then a Ford Mustang Mach 1 on someone’s front lawn with a for sale sign.

But the two winners were a lovely old Morgan which was part of Morgans Over America. They’re driving 6500 miles and it looked like a lot of fun. The other was a 1970 or 71 Chevy Suburban, lovingly restored as a trailer hauler, working like it was built to do.

Over the weekend I saw a Porsche 911 with a Mustang 5.0 engine shoehorned into it. I didn’t see it actually driving, but it must have had interesting handling.

Driving past me today in Sunnyvale was an early 1960s Triumph TR3A, black convertible, like this one:

As it drove past it sounded smooth and sweet.

A Viper. It was going about 200mph sitting still.

I had to do a double-take on the way to work this-morning.

My wife and i were driving on the appropriately-named Auto Park Way in Escondido, and i saw an old Mercedes coming towards us. At first, from a distance, i thought that it might be a 190SL, which is one of my favorite classic Mercs. But as it got closer, i could see that it was sleeker and lower than the 190.

As we passed one another, i realized that it was a 300SL convertible. Pretty hard to believe, i know, but the 300SL is one of the most iconic sportscars of all time, and one of my personal favorites, and i don’t think i could be mistaken about it.

mhendo, I think you are likely right. Those cars are very distinctive.

I saw a Fisker Karma this morning outside a Caribou Coffee along with a couple of classic older cars. There were a bunch of retired gentlemen sitting outside the shop enjoying one of our last warm, sunny days. I am sure the cars belonged to some of them.
