Yesterday I saw a Nash Metropolitan. Heavily oxidized/faded orange/white, looked and sounded like it was on its last legs, but being driven in normal small town traffic. I can remember when they were new and I still think they’re cute. Wouldn’t be caught dead in one though, being a manly man and all.

I saw a Plymouth Prowler in bright metallic orange and in the bright sun, it almost glowed. The driver was enjoying its top down motoring on a nice day.

It’s been a few years since I’ve seen a Prowler.

Looks like a late 1960s Datsun 1600 Fairlady, spotted in Ajo, AZ. I saw it the previous day but not it time to take a photo. We had finished our hike this day and were getting gas for a long drive ahead and he pulled into the restaurant next door.

A mid-90s (3rd generation) Honda Acty SDX kei truck. I’m seeing more and more of these around here. RHD import.

Not a car, but a truck with Costa Rica license plates.

Many, many years ago, when I was working in RTP, there was always a car in the parking garage with Guam plates.

I saw one of the new USPS trucks for the first time on Saturday. (Not this one.)

A pink early 1960s Cadillac. Either there was something really heavy in the trunk, or it was a lowrider and the driver had the rear suspension set lower than the front.

Also, a very beat up 1990s Lexus sedan that sounded more like a loud, rumbly muscle car than a sedate luxury car. I don’t know if someone actually crammed something like a Chevy 350 into it, or hopped up the V8 it came with, or if the muffler had just fallen off. But it seemed very incongruous to hear all that noise from a car for which they used to advertise the smoothness of the engine by balancing wine glasses on the hood.

RHD kei cars and trucks are gaining in popularity around me here too, but they are still quite rare. Many in California have Montana license plates and are registered to LLCs in Montana.

I saw an Avanti on a trailer behind a Uhaul. Looked to be in really nice shape.

The design is older than me, but it still looks futuristic.

I saw a Dodge Rampage on the road this morning – Dodge’s answer to the El Camino in the early 1980s. I don’t think those were that common even when they were new. It was kind of beat up and being driven by an old man (which makes me wonder if he’s had it since new) but it was interesting to see one in the road nonetheless.

And this morning I saw an early-to-mid-1980s Oldsmobile 88 or maybe a 98. It like it was in like-new condition. I think people are actually restoring cars from that era now. It’s a little strange having card from my childhood being viewed as “classics” now.

And last night I saw a Buick Grand National on the road. That car is a bit of a sleeper if you don’t know what you’re looking at – when I first noticed it ahead of me at the traffic light I just thought it was an old Regal (which is mildly interesting to me itself, just because you hardly ever see them anymore). Then I got closer and noticed the all black paint job and Grand National badges. And the fact that he pulled away from the light way faster than an ordinary Regal was another clue  .

While the Grand National got all the press, one could also get a Regal T-Type. It had all the performance of the GN but looked like a standard Regal.

Yesterday I saw a late 1960s Dodge Charger.

I am remiss in my posting here.

  • Two weeks ago I was in NYC & saw something interesting, at first I thought it was the Google Map vehicle pulled over to the side. As I got closer I realized it was a Waymo. The first time I saw one; what made it super interesting, though was the fact that the pilot program law expired on Mar 31st. (& even then they were required to have a driver in them) but WTH was this thing doing on the street w/o a law allowing it?

  • On Friday afternoon I took a tour of Fenway (& then later that evening, the game); it wrapped up & I was leaving as the players were arriving. As I was leaving Aroldis Chapman pulled up. At first I thought it was a BPD Bearcat, but no, it’s appeared to be a Terradyne Gurkha CIV; depending upon build, between $300 & $500 thou.

  • Yesterday, I saw an '86 Caprice Hooptie. A hooptie, as in big hoops (rims) not as in beater.
