What's the name of that one song, with the words, and the music, and the singer?

I appeal to the genuis of the Straight Dope users once again. If you ever can only remember a part of something, this is the site to ask. I have been helped out on more than one equation. So here is my latest quandry…

The song was either in the late 80’s or early 90’s, and the only part I can remember are these words:

"Gone, gone, gone, she's been gone so long."

Now, the ‘gone, gone gone’ part is sung extremly fast, so it sounds like ‘gonegonegone.’ Unfortunatly that is all I can remember. Thanks to all who can even think of a song it could be, because I can download or search for possibilites and check them myself.

Sounds like Chilliwack’s “My Girl (gone, gone, gone)”, but it was released in late 1981. It peaked at #22.

Finally one I recognize and Blue Sky beats me to it. I think that was the first 45 I ever bought.

“My girl, she meant the world to me. She’s gone, and that’s a tragedy.” Deep.
