What's the one place you've been to that no other Doper has visited?

Yes, went all the way to Durness. Unfortunately I didn’t see the caves of Smoo. And there is no reason to stop in Laid. I did get a picture of the sign though.

David Simmons:

Been there. Way freaky.

The National Museum of Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), specifically the World’s First Infidelity Exhibition. A huge chastity belt collection!

Chastity

Been to the Winchester House in San Jose, CA, several times. How about the Rosicrucian Museum, also in San Jose?

Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum

Have been to Guam, also Wake Island, Kwajalein and Einewetok (Marshall Islands). I think the doper Lives on a Plane may live on Kwaj.

Visited my grandmother’s birthplace, Popovic, Croatia.

Blue Mountain, southeastern Montana. (not the one by Missoula - the one east of Glendive)

You haven’t even been able to drive there since the mid-80’s.

False Pass Alaska. Short cut to the Bering Sea and Bristol bay. The town has actually got larger than it was when the cannery was there in the 70s. Only 8-10 Ft of water at high water in the pass, so it is always a nail biter going through.

Port Moller Alaska, population 3 + winter watchman in the winter.

Bethel Alaska, hub for may native villages on the Kuskokwim River. Good runway, heck of a sail trying to get a ship up that river. Various government offices and not much else.

Starbucks or Subway there?

2 km under the earth, anyone?

I’ve been to the Aberdeen Proving Grounds at least.

I grew up in that general vicinity. I’ve been to Walworth, Ontario, Victory, and Mexico. West Walworth, I’m not so sure about. I picked my sister up at her friend’s house pretty close to there circa 1990. I want to say it was somewhere along Atlantic Avenue but I don’t remember for sure.

Can you be more specific? I’ve been to many, many such places in Maine. Township 6 North of Weld, Township E, T2 R8 NWP (Township 2, Range 8, North of Waldo Patent), T1 R6 WELS (Township 1, Range 6, West of the Easterly Line of the State), etc.

My candidates:

Centerville, Maine (near Machias)
East Madrid, Maine (north of Farmington)
Pequaywan, Minnesota (north of Two Harbors)
Fannys Hole, Idaho. (a real place, but now uninhabited, west of Challis)

Couple of times, most recently in June.

How about further south by the San Juan’s goosenecks, The Honaker Trail?

There’s an Iron Range mine in northern Minnesota that goes that deep I think, and I was at the bottom.

I lay underneath the arch and took a few really neat photos, looking up.

Yes, I was there in 1973 (I think) - it was on the first Ancient Cities tour by Intourist.

Has anybody else made it to Leptis Magna or Sabratha in Libya?

If you’re thinking Soudan Sate Park, then naah, it doesn’t go anywhere near as deep just over 713m. In my experience (as a mine geologist), the deepest mines are Wiswatersrand gold mines, and I’ve been all the way to the deepest of them all (at the time) - actually, on looking it up, I’m out by another mile and a bit - Western Deep is 3 749 m deep. But it’s no longer the deepest by a large stretch.

Kato Achaia, Greece (lived for 1 year)
Pordenone, Italy (2 years)
Tuzla, Bosnia (1 month)
Olten, Switzerland (2 days)

Fun place, huh? I haven’t been through there in probably 30 years…

Cool! My dad worked out there for years, as both a camper and adult leader. Grace Valley, too. I think Grace is where we had a horse break into our cabin when I was about 6…

I believe she was also trying to confuse/outrun the wandering, unhappy souls of the men killed with Winchester guns…

How about Tindari, Sicily? I have been in the Sanctuary in front of the Black Madonna (said sanctuary built by a Mafioso trying to get into heaven at the last minute, IIRC). The legend of the Black Madonna is fascinating, although the Wiki page doesn’t do it justice…

I think Tindari was also the ruin where Pavarotti sang in the ruined open amphitheater and said the acoustics were as good as a modern opera house.

The top of the lighthouse at East Point, Saturna Island BC.

Okahumpka, Florida.
