My question is: What’s the religious “theme” in this upcoming Indy movie? In Raiders it was Judaism, Temple of Doom had Hinduism, and Crusade featured Christianity.
So what’s next? The obvious choice seems to be Islam. Those desert settings always worked well for Indy and I could see him being chased across the dunes again in search of a hair from the beard of the Prophet (or whatever). But maybe an Indiana Jones movie with an Islamic theme would be tricky in today’s climate. You almost know someone’s going to shout “Blasphemy!” as soon as it’s announced.
Buddhism? Send Indy to Tibet and set it at the beginning of his career and you could explain the origin of Indy and Marion’s romance and how Marion ended up running a bar in Nepal. (Of course by 2005, Harrison Ford is way too old for that version of Indy, so I guess that’s out…)
Taoism? I think you could have a pretty cool martial arts extravaganza with Indy fending off Taoist kung fu experts in monasteries across China.
Shintoism? Indy’s proved he can kick Nazi butt. How about sending him after Tojo’s minions?
Well, enough idle speculation. Does anybody actually have the straight dope on this?
It’s supposed to be set in the 1950’s, and the communists are the bad guys. If the title IS The Emperor’s Tomb, maybe it’s Confucinism? (sp?) Indy goes to Red China to break into the as-yet unexcavated tomb of the Emperor Chin (if that’s right–the different system of transcribing chinese has me very, very confused. I mean, it’s still Peking duck, right?) This is pure speculation, of course, but I think it could be a rocking good movie.
I went Googling around for “Indiana Jones” AND “Emperor’s Tomb” and came up with a ton of hits for a videogame of that name but I haven’t spotted anything that directly talks about a movie.
1935? I’ve got to think that Harrison Ford is too old to be playing a 1935 version of Indiana Jones. (Although it would be cool to have Indy meet Mao on the Long March…) As for the religious theme, it almost sounds like Taoist alchemy is involved–but maybe I’m stretching.
Is “The Emperor’s Tomb” really the next movie, or is it just an Indiana Jones video game (albeit sanctioned by Spielberg, et al)?
Peking duck is a bit like Chicken Kiev, they retain the old spelling while the capitals have cast off the foreign names and now call themselves Bei3jing1 and Kyiv.
I’m kind of dubious of a religious element in the next film, all that’s specified so far is a “supernatural” element. And I wouldn’t trust any rumors yet as to the plot, I’ve seen a lot of Indy video game plots reported as the one for the movie (though there was at least some preliminary location scouting for Fate of Atlantis years ago; I doubt that’s the film that’s going to be made, though).
Yeah, for awhile, Fate of Atlantis was going to be the next movie, but it was cancelled. They also made a game called The Infernal Machine, but it was never rumored to be a movie.
There has been quite a strong rumour that it will have something to do with aliens, but I don’t know about that. Every time a treatment gets written, and is leaked, the fans go “Argh! Nooo!” and it mysteriously gets scrapped, and the official statement is again “we haven’t got a story yet”.
Recently, they finally locked down a story, and are going ahead with it. But nobody knows what it is this time.
Good God, Harrison Ford is like, what now? 60? It’d probably be Indiana Jones and the Quest for Depends, or something like that, especially if Sean Connery’s in it too.
Does anyone know if Abner, Indy’s estranged kid, will make an appearance? He featured heavily in the famous IJ4 fanscript from years ago, although he was still a kid in that one. (If the movie takes place in the 50’s, as rumored, he’d be in his 30s now.)
Actually I had seen people saying Infernal Machine was going to be the next movie and then it was a game instead. You’ll be surprised how often people jump the gun when they hear “Indiana Jones and ___________”.
