Okay dopers, this is driving me nuts. What’s the word used to describe, a quote that sounds like something someone would say, but didn’t really?
For example: I started out with nothing, and still have most of it left was not really said by Groucho Marx, but sounds like something he might have said. Is there a word to describe that?
This is not what you’re asking for, but it amuses me to no end:
The word is legs. Spread the word.
The quote is usually attributed to Groucho Marx, but in reality was said by _____________.
Does that help?
Are you thinking of “apochryphal?” It’s close, but means something more like erroneously attributed.
Yes! That’s exactly what I was looking for.
My life is now complete.
Err, apochryphal, that is. My internal thesaurus kept spitting out apropos and apostolic, heh.
Well, pbbbbt to you all, then.
