Scuffle with lobster man puts students in hot water

Early Saturday, campus police cited four students after a disturbance at 2:41 a.m. outside the three-story structure that Kofmehl is building from scrap wood next to Doherty Hall, a classroom building. He moved into the half-finished domicile Feb. 1, wearing a lobster suit and vowing to speak to no one for three months.

“University police said they got a call saying a group of about 12 males was trying to break into the structure,” Carnegie Mellon spokeswoman Kyle Fisher Morabito said. “The officers witnessed some males going up the stairs and apprehended four of them. They admitted that they had done some damage to the property.”

Part of ‘lobster man’s’ home is scuttled for safety reasons

The “lobster man” at Carnegie Mellon University got caught in the pincers of city government yesterday.

University work crews tore down part of Bill Kofmehl’s do-it-yourself house after fire officials, the city’s chief building inspector and the school’s insurance underwriter expressed safety concerns about the wood structure rising next to a classroom building.

So the Lobster Boy finally made the Straight Dope, huh? I’m a senior at CMU, and this has been a talking point on campus for weeks now. The student body’s pretty split on the issue–some people think what he’s doing is fine and cool, and others are really mad that he’s “wasting their tuition” on something that they don’t even consider art.

A lot of people were mad, though, when his house got attacked. It just seemed so stupid and violent–apparently some guys from another frat were there throwing concrete at his house before the guys who were arrested came and threw eggs. Concrete?

And now, he’s getting evicted! Sigh…part of me feels bad, but he decided to build this, you know? The fire code is a bastard, but he should have investigated it a little more when he started to build it.

Lobster Man doesn’t have seven legs to stand on. He should have read the fine print in the lease he signed - proper construction codes were outlined in a separate claws. He’s in hot water now, and campus officials are really seeing red.
