ABC Stores sell general and touristy merchandise. In Honolulu (Waikiki, anyway), there are a couple of ABC Stores in every block. They blanketed the place. What gives? Why are there so many?
Because 7/11 did such a lousy job.
I wondered the same thing the couple times I’ve been there. I believe it’s like Walgreen’s/Osco for those in Illinois or other pharmacy stores elsewhere (hell, even convienence stores): they saturate the market so that no one else can afford to put up a store.
I would imagine that the individual stores make little enough money to exist as a separate entity, but that when you’ve got three on the same block, and they’re all paying into the corporate coffers, you can make up in volume for lack of margin. Of course, since there aren’t enough areas for competitors to get a foothold, youv’e got 100% of the market!
Here’ a story about them.
Well I mean I think its assumed the ““real”” meaning for ABC is ““All blocks Covered”” But I agree, way too many of them. Incidently enough, In Tony Hawk’s Underground, ABC stores can’t be found, only “XYZ” stores.
