Either most men in my office cannot dress, or this has become acceptable? Is it just me, or have other men (and women) noticed how men will wear a tie that does not complement the outfit, but instead make the well-established faux pas (or, so I thought) by matching the outfit, off by perhaps just a shade of the same color?
Look, I’d be last one to notice fashion, but I find this hard on the eye and so annoying! So, when I notice it, it MUST be bad!
I don’t think I’ve noticed this look recently, but there was a trend of wearing a tie the same color as one’s shirt about ten years ago. Regis Phibin used to wear shirts and ties that were the same (or nearly the same) color back when he was hosting Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? I see it’s even mentioned in his Wikipedia entry.
I don’t think it is a faux pas to match the outfit. Nor do I think it is wrong to not match the outfit. There are some combinations that do not work, but I have to look at them to see. I have a couple hundred ties and about a dozen suits.
Like others have requested, some links to what you’re talking about would be great. Also, an idea as to what you think a good combination is would be interesting as well.
I own about 15-20 ties - some of them work with most of my clothes, 1 or 2 only work with specific shirts/pants.
Regis’ example from ten years ago was perhaps the deliberate antithesis of John Gotti’s trend from ten years previous, of extravagantly floral pattern ties contrasting with dark, conservative suits.
IMHO, I wish we could go back to when where your alma mater or former branch of service (“wavy navy”) dictated what useless piece of cloth you wrapped around your neck in the morning, and then get on with your day.
Is there something stopping you from just picking a tie as “your” tie and sticking with it? Find one you like and buy 10 of them and you’re set for life. You could even make up a little story like it’s family tradition for if anyone asks you about it. Fun, right??
I try to avoid wearing a tie as much as possible. I do not find them comfortable to wear and they are always getting in the way unless you are wearing a jacket, which I find much too warm most of the time. Admittedly, one can look very stylish in a tie and jacket, but it is just not my scene.
yes it is that thread. If so many of us don’t like wearing nooses… er, I mean, ties… than that might explain why we don’t know the “proper” way to do so.
Eh?
if that’s a “well-established faux pas” then I think the people who “established” that can go suck on the loud end of a 12-gauge shotgun.
