What's wrong with my Router

My internet at work keeps going down. Frankly all signs point to it being a problem with the internet or modem. I can’t get to the internet, but the inTRAnet works fine (computers see each other, can print across the network). Power cycling the modem and router sometimes works sometimes dosen’t, and when it does work, it get’s the internet back up for just a few minutes.
Here’s why I think it’s the router though, When the internet is down, computers can still see each other, and I can ping other computers, BUT I can’t get into the router and I can’t even ping it. During the few minutes here and there that everything is working, I can ping the router and get into it just fine. Any ideas?

I’ll answer any questions in when I get to work, I just wanted to get the ball rolling before I left.

BTW can anyone recommend a good router. Seriously, for as long as I can remember I’ve had nothing but bad luck (usually pretty similar to this) with Linksys routers.

Oh, off the top of my head, I’m going to go ahead and guess it’s a WRT54G or B.

I can’t be of much help, but I’m interested in seeing what others have to say about this one! I’m having a problem here at home with our router. We can’t access the internet sometimes…we’ve found that after running a virus scan, it works perfectly. The scan says everything is fine/no viruses, and then it connects to the internet. Weird. Our router is a Linksys, too. Model WUSB54GC.

We have three computes, two of them won’t connect at all. The third one, I had just cut off internet access to. Hey, I wonder if that has anything at all to do with it. Well, if I can get back it, I suppose that’s the first thing I’ll check.

Good luck, Joey P! All I know is that we’re at a loss as to what the problem is with ours.

Piggybacking too.

This sounds similar to a problem we’ve had- now with multiple routers. Occasionally we will lose signal strength and be unable to connect with any of several computers. Peer to peer is not affected.

Rebooting the router usually solves this issue, but not this time. This seems like interference, but I have no idea what to do about it.

I am stranded!

Sunspots?

We’ve tried rebooting the router, computers, modem, etc. NOTHING is working, other than running that stupid virus scan…so far, anyway! We’ll see what happens next time it goes out. It may not work then. Never know.

Stoooopid computers.

Have you tried bypassing the router and plugging your ethernet cable directly into the modem? Does it maintain a connection then, or does it break the connection after only a few minutes?

The hub/switch portion of the router, and the routing circuitry/logic are fairly seperated on these types of devices. When you say you can get to NEITHER the outside world (internet), NOR the Router Console, logic points me to the router as well.

There was a bug in one of the versions of Linksys code that made routers do just that very issue.

Download the latest firmware for your version. and see if that helps. Read the release notes included, and you’ll likely find a “fix note” for your exact issue.

9 times out of 10, when I’ve dealt with a Linksys problem, it’s just this sort of issue. In general, they are pretty rock solid.

If not, those units are relatively cheap, you could always just get a new one, and try it out. If the replacement doesn’t work, I’d be pointing back towards the cable/dsl modem.

Not likely, as you say that you can neither reach the router, nor the internet.

I did that and it still didn’t work, so I called up the ISP, and it must’ve been something on their side. Everything is fine now. It’s still strange that when it wasn’t working, the intranet was up, but I couldn’t ping or access the router.

Any good suggestion a good router, I’ve had nothing but bad luck with linksys.

I’ve had very good performance and no problems with a D-Link DSL-504T and its current replacement DSL-G624T.

My daughter reinstalled our router, and things are working fine here now, too.

Well, I’m still up a creek.
