What's Your Fandom?

Nah, I’ve thought about it 'cause I have friends in San Francisco but I’m not super active on the scene. I follow discussions and keep up with the news (I can’t believe MangaBonBons closed!) but don’t do a ton of participating so I don’t have a lot of virtual friends to hook up with. (the only person I email regularly is Slash-kun and we mostly talk about politics anyway) They do sound interesting. I would have loved to have seen Youka Nitta when she was there last year.

Yeah, yeah, I know all about the name debate of at both Aestheticism and the AMLA list but “yaoi” is the most popular Western term so I use it.

I’m not so sure the stories are less stereotypical. It seems like half of what’s out there is the old school-boy romance cliche done a million times. It used to seem fresh to me until I had seen it so often. Now I mostly buy salaryman/blue collar woker romances 'cause I think it’s so sweet when two lonely people find each other.

:smack:

Forgot to mention that I am an Aubrey/Maturin nutcase as well.

Come next year and we can hang out together! It is loads of fun, even if you aren’t a big yaoi fan. Plus there are always tons of cute guys.

Yeah, now it is becoming more cliche and it is harder to find the more unusual stuff. I either like it really cute with an awesome plot or totally strange and unique. Who are your favorite mangakas?

Hello Kitty

::::::::::::::runs away hiding face:::::::::::::

I don’t know if this is a comfort or not, but I love Hello Kitty too. And it’s not just the pre-fab stuff, either. I make my own Hello Kitty stuff (not for sale, though). I buy the books from discount stores and cut them up to put Hello Kitty decoupage decals on notebooks and little chests of drawers and stepstools and lampshades.

If I admit I’m crazy, will you stop looking at me like that?

Also: Related to my BtVS fetish, I have a real hard-on for the tribute videos that fans make from their DVDs. I am very picky and have little to no patience for most of the saccharine shipper crap out there, but by following links from “awards” sites I’ve found some very sharp, funny and poignant work. Xandra and Charmax are my faves.

I don’t consider myself a fanboy about anything, but…

I am Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett’s bitch.

(That’s Lord Dunsany.) So yeah, I’m very enthused about classic fantasy, horror, and weird fiction. (Insert the expected names…let me know if you really want the actual list.)

For TV, I really like Firefly. I’ve also bought the Buffy DVDs, but mostly because I didn’t really catch on to the show till after it got canceled.

Bands? Stuff like Hawkwind, Psychic TV, Acid Mothers Temple, and their various incestuous relations. Ditto for the Walkabouts, I suppose.

As for why? Well, Buffy and Firefly have been discussed enough so it should be clear. Hawkwind et al. serve as a vehicle for transcendental experience, and I just happen to like the songwriting and musicianship of the Walkabouts etc.

And IMO Dunsany is the best fantasy writer ever. And yes, I’m counting Tolkien when I make that assessment.
