Jolly Ranchers hands down. But I would really like to know how they got their name. That may be a question for GQ though.
I heartily concur. Jolly Ranchers are the best. Especially cherry Jolly Ranchers.
But what’s up with the ones they had out this halloween? They’re what, 2 inches long?
My favorite hard candy has to be butterscotch.
If I got em, I’ll suck on em all day.
Horehound.
I adore Creme Savers in strawberries and creme they’re so good and yummy and stops herself from drooling Okay, I think I’ll just go away now.
Kitty
Oh I love Cream Savers too. My all-time favorite is sour apple Jolly Ranchers.
Make that 2 votes for horehounds.
I also love rootbeer barrels and ButterRum Lifesavers.
I’m naming my first root canal after Werther’s toffees. One between the cheek and gum, a cup of coffee, and I’m set until I run out of coffee.
However, HOREHOUND? Jolly Ranchers are bad enough (nobody has mentioned the watermelon ones!), but horehound?
Granted some of those mentioned are pretty good but Jolly Ranchers are just plain consistent. I could eat one or two every morning of my life.
And slythe or someone please tell me what a horehound is. I heard them mentioned in another thread but I have never heard of them. Or at least I can’t remember if I have. Are they sold down south?
And dropzone, yeah the watermelon Jollys are the best. A nice understated bouquet of real watermelon with every one you eat.
Horehound is an antique candy from your great-grandma’s days. One of those “natural” (bleah!) flavors–as I recall it’s sorta root-beery. They really aren’t all that bad, but I think these guys like them for the name. And it is a great name.
Actually I enjoy the flavor, though I can’t really compare it to anything else. My Grandmother always had a big bag full of 'em (lozenges, kind of a coffee brown color with sugar crystals on the outside). Horehound is a plant in the mint family and you can make tea from it too. It’s probably a mostly rural thing.
Gotta go with the Werther’s. Never without a bag of 'em.
Juicefuls, no contest. They actually taste like the flavor they’re supposed to be, plus they have juice in the center.
Nothing, absolutely nothing, compares to Neccos. Especially the chocolate ones. Mmmm. Hard to come by in Canada. Pity.
I dunno - Jolly Ranchers are good but nothing quite stands up to the Atomic Fireball
unless of course someone can find some of the old “Hot” warheads - the sour ones don’t cut it
orange creamsavers.
Butterscotch, with Root Beer Barrels a close runner up. I don’t like fruit-flavored hard candies generally, but the watermelon Jolly Ranchers are OK.
Atomic Fireballs are my favorite.
Jolly Ranchers are an excellent choice, but my two favorites don’t seem to be available (in the U.S., at least):
Zotz – Especially good to give to a friend to see the reaction. Zotz are hard candies with a baking soda center. Bite into them and they fizz in your mouth.
Regal Crown Sour Lemon – All of the Regal Crown stuff (even Sour Grape ) was great, but sour lemon was #1.
My favorite is the little strawberry ones, with the chewy jam-like center. There seem to be several varieties though, and some are not high quality.
I am also very partial to these “limon” mints (half white, half light green, swirled together a little in the middle) that I’ve seen at a few restaurants around Austin.
