What's Your Favorite Kind of Apple?

The kind in a pie.

Royal Gala, the King of apples.

For eating out of hand: Golden Delicious, Roxbury Russet, or Cox’s Orange Pippin.

For baking: Stayman Winesap.

Braeburns and Granny Smiths. I didn’t particularly care for any apples but Granny Smiths until I had a Braeburn about three years ago. There are good red apples, who knew?

Stayman Winesap
Used to ride my horse through an orchard of these as a kid - still remember their tart, juicy taste.
Also great in pies.

I am so glad that a lot of you love a good, firm, English Cox.

I prefer Pink Lady myself…

Golden Delicious for the flavour, Granny Smith for the texture. I seem to recall that Washington State and British Columbia (Okanagan Valley) Golden Delicious had a better, firmer texture than those I can get out here (Maryland). I’ll have to eat a lotta apples when I’m home for a visit!

For some time, my favorite has been Jonathans.

I don’t know if it’s a regional thing, or just general apple trends, or if every last pure Jonathan tree has been wiped out by a horrific apple plague, but I haven’t seen any since we moved from the midwest to the east coast. Out here it’s all Jonagolds and Jonamacs, which are okay, but, golly, I’d sure like to sink my teeth into a plain old Jonathan!

Fujis and Galas, to be sure. I like very crisp, sweet apples*. Yum!

Jonathans for me!

Fuji is my fave. It’s the only apple used by my former employer who owns a pastry shop. Great fun peeling and coring a case of apples- we’d end up eating a couple apples in the process. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find really good ones at the grocery store. I also like Jonathan and MacIntosh.

Red Delicious: The peel and flesh have an odd flavor to me & they get mealy.
Golden Delicious: Not nearly crisp enough and have the odd flavor too.

I can’t wait for fall.

Oh my lordie , I love jonagold apples so much that I would kill for them. Well, not really… but you get the idea. Problem is I can rarely find them around these parts so I have to settle for Golden Delicious. They don’t even come close :frowning:

Another Braeburn fan, though I’m eating a Granny Smith right now.

Not necessarily. The best Golden Delicious apples I had were from a farm in South Jersey, and good GD apples are few and far between here in Seattle. I’ve been pretty underwhelmed with the selection of apples in general around here–you can get good supermarket-appeal apples, and the Fujis are fine (albeit sweetly one-dimensional), but the more “interesting” apples (Pippins, Winesaps, russets, etc.) are very hard to find.

I can’t speak on the apple situation in BC, of course, but this year I’ll need to put forth some effort to see if anyone in western Washington has a selection of heirloom apples, since the situation at the markets is kinda grim.

I like Pink Ladies and Fujis for eating. My co-op recently had some New Zealand Rose apples, and those were really good, too, as well as being very pretty.

Granny Smiths. After reading this thread, I’m glad that I have a bag of them to dig into when I get home. I also like a nice Pippin.

Fujis. I’m not a fan of tart apples.

Granny Smith. With a shake of salt on each bite.
