I am that saddest of creatures, a cash-strapped clothes horse, and so I must spend my money on dreary “must-haves” like rent and food, instead of indulging my tactile and visual sweet tooth on new clothes. However, I’m curious (as always) about the personalities and interests of other people: what’s your favorite article of clothing?
Anytime I get to see a bra and/or panties.
*Time *of clothing? Definitely the 1930s and '40s. I have a few suits, hats, and such of that vintage, and although I sweat like I’m under interrogation and appear to have a pillow crammed down my coat front every time I wear one, I continue to be very fond of them.
Winter woollies are my favourites.
At the moment it’s a little black BCBG halter dress; I bought it to wear to a glitzy martini party my boss gets tickets to every year, and it’s one of those magic dresses that makes you feel like a million bucks the moment you put it on. Makes me wish I had a reason to dress up more than a handful of times a year.
(I’m answering the actual OP, not the title…cuz “time” sounds like “era” to me but you asked about “favorite article of clothing.”)
If I had to pick an era it would be late fifties/early sixties. A-line three-quarter sleeve wool coats, sleek pencil skirts, high heels, boatneck dresses…
I guess actually you could still wear all of these, but women don’t put on heels to go run errands anymore, and I don’t work in a corporate environment, so I’d feel a bit absurd.
This one time there was this “article” in a mag…
I grew up in the sub tropics so it figures that I longed and dreamed about layering sweaters, scarves and sumptuous long sleeve T’s paired with suede boots and coats. Now I live up north and can indulge in my soft sweater fantasies. My favorite piece of clothing is a soft wool camisole that has lasted me many years, without a single thread coming loose. I’m so glad I bought two at the time.
My coloured tights. They brighten up my otherwise black wardrobe.
Workout gear (exercise clothes).
Specifically, Under Armour Heat Gear shirts.
Hey, you asked.
I have a long sleeve shit from Lucky Brand. It has cool designs stiched into it, in an asymmetrical pattern.
My favorite time of year? Fall and winter, I guess. Cashmere sweaters, leather coat, nice boots. I look better all covered up!..My favorite era for clothing? I sometimes wish I could be a rich woman living back in Edwardian days (like Upstairs Downstairs) and loll around the house in ‘morning gowns’ and dress for dinner in lace and jewel-encrusted evening dresses, lol. I have an inordinate fondness for satin and lace… Seriously, maybe the 30’s - Jean Harlow and Ginger Rogers and Faye Dunaway (in Bonnie and Clyde)… I know the 50’s and 60’s tight sheathes, pencil skirts, and stiletto heels come and go in fashion, but they’re uncomfortable to wear and I don’t have the figure…In the 60’s I had a leather vest, red white and blue like an American flag, with loooong fringe - it cost a fortune, but I was stylin’ and edgy and everyone gasped and asked WHERE did I get that VEST? (Casual Corner!). My boyfriend and I in the 70’s had matching ankle length oxblood red leather coats, and I wish I had a picture of us…
You might try checking out thrift stores for clothes - you might have to look and look, but I’ve found beautiful things, good expensive things, for a few dollars. Walmart jeans look great topped with a fluffy angora sweater with a glossy silk blouse underneath.
Excluding social proprieties (e.g., dressing appropriately for work, for church, etc.), I wear the same thing year-round, weather be damned: shorts and a T-shirt.
My winter coat hasn’t seen the outside of my closet for probably five years. I figure, I’m only going to be outside for a few seconds, so why bother? For lounging around at home, what point is there in putting on pants and a sweater (which I find ridiculously uncomfortable) when I can wear comfy clothes under a blanket?
The only exception I’ll make is that, during the winter, I’ll put on jeans if we’re going to a public place like a restaurant, but I’ll still wear a T-shirt or a polo shirt.
I think I meant to say “item” of clothing and had a brainfart :smack:, but feel free to continue-I’m a fan of vintage clothing and 50’s style myself.
I like summer because I don’t have to wear socks, but fall because I have too many sweaters to choose from.
You have the most interesting shits! Perhaps a doctor’s visit is in order.
For me, I guess it’s flannel PJ pants and a long-sleeved t-shirt. Comfy! But for leaving the house, my Birkenstocks do for my bland wardrobe what sandra_nz’s tights do for hers.
I get a lot of fiber.
Time of clothing? Summer. Less laundry.
OH! ITEM of clothing? Well I have a fetish for fleece-lined hoodies lately, for some reason. If only they made a fleece-lined bra to match, I would be in heaven!!!
Favorite in my actual wardrobe now? I have an off-white fleece pullover, with blue embroidery. Makes me feel good to wear it.
Favorite in time? I want a cloak with a hood (or is hood implied by cloak?). I swear I’d wear it all the time, even if people laugh and point.
I love graceful, narrow skirts that fall a couple of inches below the knee. Not quite mid-calf, but getting there. If they have a bit of a tulip cut at the very end, my happiness is complete. They look so elegant with a pair of classic pumps and maybe a colorful 3/4 sleeve sweater.
I’m also a sucker for well-tailored trousers, and love the long, cuffed boot-cut ones which are the current retro must-have. I have a couple of pair, in black and brown, and wear them a lot even if the high heels necessary for their length are agonizing by the end of the day.
I love dressing for extreme cold. I have all kinds of cold weather coveralls, face masks, arctic boots and gloves. I have been out in -24 degree weather and felt I was dressed too warmly!
I have all kinds of layering stuff and can really tweak to fit the expected temps. I’m working on upgrading my rain gear lately.
My current favorite item is one of my Carhartt shirt-jacs. Heavy cotton canvas shirt with a flannel lining. Probably my black one, as it’s starting to fade out a little and looks better than when it was new. Like this
So have I. It’s an awful feeling - as if hypothermia is imminent. And for all I know, it is.
Part of my '40s jones is flight jackets. I once put a sheepskin-lined one over a plain leather one on a subzero morning. Both had heavy waterproofed finishes. I started making my own gravy before I got the car started. I’m never trying that again.
