To answer the question directly, I refuse to acknowledge the turn of the century in general and I am not even that old. I keep thinking of The Matrix, Fight Club and even TV shows like the Sopranos as “those new flicks” that just came out. My lack of knowledge about TV and movies post 2000 that aren’t kid’s shows is the 8th Wonder of the World. Uncontacted tribes in the Amazon probably know way more about them than I do.The last one I watched in the theater was Finding Dory and I only did that I loved Finding Nemo and was thrilled that they made a sequel so fast.
what's your one "movie from the last 30 years that everyone in the world has seen", but you haven't?
I’ve seen six out of the top 100 movies on that list and only because four of them are cartoons. Do I win a prize?
You have to watch Fight Club. This really annoys me, as a Chuck P fan. I have a friend who won’t watch it because he thinks its a macho movie about a club for fist-fighting men. It is not about that at all. Trust me.
According to another web community that I belong to, Independence Day. I know enough about the plot to know that I’m not interested in watching the movie.
E.T.
Titanic
Independence Day
Top Gun
prolly lots more but those were the first few that came to mind
‘The Matrix’
Any of all the Indiana Jones bullshit
‘The Empire Strikes Back’
‘Ghostbusters’
I like all sorts of movies. If done well, I like “guy” movies (war; action; intensity; murder/death/kill). I generally like Mel Gibson movies. The Patriot; Gladiator; Lethal Weapon; etc.
But I’ve never seen Bravehart. No reason–just haven’t gotten around to it.
I am few Avengers films behind, I’ll get there eventually
I really keep meaning to watch The Big Lebowski, but there just aren’t enough hours in the day.
Same with Pulp Fiction Actually I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Quentin Tarantino film.
You probably picked an okay time to check out, because the movies between Avengers and Avengers 2 definitely felt a bit formulaic if you weren’t entirely on board. The most recent batch, however, are starting to get past that. Thor Ragnarok is a bizarre, character-driven sci-fi comedy, Black Panther has a MUCH more interesting and African-inspired visual style than I expected, and Avengers 3 is just fascinatingly huge in scope.
Feel free to sit 'em out, but don’t avoid 'em just because you assume you’ve seen it already.
Look at a calendar, people. 30 years ago was 1988. A lot of these movies mentioned are older - all the original Star Wars, ET, Top Gun, not to mention the Godfather and American Graffiti.
I’m so apathetic about movies I haven’t seen, I can’t work up the energy to look up which movies I haven’t seen.
I will say that my attention to movies has dropped off rapidly in the last 15 years or so.
I do tend to see the big-budget SFX blockbusters, simply because they benefit from the big-screen auditorium venue. It’s the quiet dramas I tend to overlook; Crash, The English Patient, etc. I do give the Coens the benefit of the doubt with movies, though, so if it’s a Coen Bros. film, I’ll check it out.
A note to those who haven’t see The Big Lebowski yet think that they might at some point: it’s definitely one of those, “It’s The Journey, Not The Destination,” kind of films, and the focus is on quirky characters. If you’re looking for sensible “closure,” a plot and story that’s tidily wrapped up with a conventional bow, look elsewhere.
If anyone is pressuring you to see it, then don’t; it’s one of those movies with a je ne sais quoi that appeals to some, and other dislike. I thought it was “okay” on first viewing, but it’s grown on me over the years to the point that it’s one of my faves.
Honestly, the best way to watch TBL is to not go looking for it; if you happen across it and have some time to kill, maybe watch it then.
Pulp Fiction and Napoleon Dynamite. Pulp I just have not gotten around to seeing, Dynamite I have no interest in seeing, and I probably will not go out of my way looking for either one.
Oh, and all the current crop of superhero movies. Not interested at all.
Going by that list, I have not seen:
Black Panther (but I will when it comes on cable for free)
The Dark Knight
Catching Fire (saw the first, I had so many issues with it’s total lack of sense, I couldnt watch the 2nd)
Going by Best Picture Oscars: Not seen: Shape of water, Moonlight, Spotlight, 12 years a slave, The Artist- and many more.
Super hero movies. Any of them. If it’s based on a comic book, I haven’t seen it. Exceptions would be (I think) the Batman movie with Burgess Merideth as the Penguin and the one with the guy that died, (Heath Ledger ?) playing the Joker.
From the Top 20 of that list, I’ve not seen:
Avengers: Infinity War
Incredibles 2 (yet)
Avengers: Age of Ultron
I just got tired of the Marvel-verse, but I saw Black Panther because it looked interesting and was pretty fantastic.
See *the Incredibles. *
Probably many but the one that comes most quickly to mind is The Godfather. Never seen it, never seen any of the sequels, never felt much urge to go see it.
You have a curious interpretation of “your one movie” and “from the last 30 years”.
mmm
I didn’t write the OP. So I’m curious about your interpretation of “Going from the top fifty of both lists”.
Ferris Bueller’s day off.
