Set-up: For the duration of our cruises we see no commercials and are oblivious to new trends or fads. In the mid 80s I made a deployment to the Indian Ocean for 7 and a half months. We heard about a new toy called “Cabbage Patch Kids” – the price, the shortage, the riots. We had no idea what these things were! By the time we returned to the States, the furor had died. I saw my first “Kid” and thought, “This ugly thing is what all the fuss is over?!” I missed the Wendy’s “Where’s the beef?” campaign.
For that matter, I was stationed in Italy for three years and missed the entire Bud ad campaign with the frogs.
Conundrum: There is apparently a new bud ad campaign out where a bunch of guys say “Whazzup” for 30 seconds. I saw the other day what I can only guess was a parody of the commercial with the characters from South Park. You can imagine the flip-flopped juxtaposition of the parody entering my brain before the actual commercial!
Question(s): Is there a new Bud “Whazzup!” ad campaign? Does anyone know anything about it? Is this a figment of our collective, overworked imaginations; a cruel practical joke that the citizens of North America cooked up to fuck with my head; or the real deal?

There apparently is a Budweiser “WHAAAAAAZUP!!!” campaign but for some reason I have only seen these spots on the internet, never on television. (WHAAAAZUP with that??) There are about 3 or 4 versions, all of them different plays on the young-men-screaming-“WHAAAAAZUP!!”-at-each-other-theme. You can view all the spots at www.adcritic.com as well as a clever “Superfriends” spoof of the original ad.
I hear ya chief!I was TOTALLY isolated from the rest of the world for 108 days on a “Northern run” While I was stationed on a sub.I remember coming back home and thinking “Madonna?..who the hell is Madonna?”
Although, sometimes it was a good thing.I missed nearly the whole “Jim and Tammy Baker” thing.
The story, as I understand it, is that a group of friends got into the habit of making an elaborate running gag of saying, “Whazzzzup!” in the most obnoxious manner possible. Having myself been in groups that developed some strange behavior, I can tell you that this sort of thing can be a lot of fun for the insiders. However, apparently these friends made a short film comprised of people saying “Whazzzzup!” loudly, and even still I think that this was probably funny. But then the film got recast as a Budweiser commercial, and this obnoxious yelling of “Whazzzup!” became a fad, which I hope to God will be short lived.
ooh, ooh, ooh, if anyone has a link for the South Park parody of Whazzup! please post it. The Superfriends one is pretty good, but my roommate loves South Park and we’d love to see it.
Proof that I watch too much TV:
The commercials are indeed for Budweiser, and feature a bunch of friends calling each other on the phone, saying nothing but “Whazzuuuuuuuup!” (IIRC, there are five commercials in all, including one where a bunch of Chinese cooks start yelling the phrase)
When they are all five of them are done saying “Whazzuuup,” Guy 1 says, “Just watching the game, havin’ a Bud.”
Guy 2: “True”
Guy 1: “True.”
Then the actual slogan: “Budweiser: True.”
The commerials have been spoofed on TV, and on talk shows. There is even talk of these guys getting their own sitcom. I love the ads, but I’m not so sure how long the “Whazzuuuuuuup” bit can last.
