and the title match:
Rand Al’Thor vs. Richard Rahl

Feel free to make any other matches if you want.

IANAA (I am not an answer): As good as The Wheel of Time is, I liked The Sword of Truth better. I liked the series for the simple reason that each Sword of Truth book presents a complete adventure.

Rand Al’Thor Vs. Richard Rahl:
Richard pulls out his sword and runs at Rand. Rand blasts him to cinders with his magic, then whines about his conscience bothering him for the next seven books.

I’m going to quote from my reviews at http://www.sffworld.com. (btw, it’s worth a visit if you’ve never been there.)

In referece to “Wizard’s First Rule”:

As far as Jordan’s books go, I stopped reading them after “Lord of Chaos” because I kept forgetting what was going on between book releases. I do remember that I enjoyed them, and didn’t have any of the above complaints.

The best “mass-market” series out right now is George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, imho - but that’s a bit of a hijack considering the OP. sorry.

WOT once was great, but now kinda sucks. SOT always really sucked, and now really sucks moose. IMHO, of course.

I got into the first few SOT books, but it got silly pretty quickly. I’ve been a WOT follower from right near the start. It got slow there for a few books, but the last one fixed a lot of his problems and got things moving again. And ditto on the George RR Martin series. Very very good stuff.

There. You have my opinion. Now you can all get to sleep instead of waiting up for it.

I prefer Goodkind’s writing style over Jordan’s actually. Perhaps Goodkind could do with a little variation in sentence structure, but Jordan goes overboard with adjectives and secondary clauses, especially when describing women’s clothes. As for characters, both authors have their pluses and minuses. Goodkind’s don’t develop much, as you say, but they do generally act in more rational ways. The whole gender war thing in the Wheel of Time gets very tiresome, but I suppose some people are like that in real life. Jordan’s characters tend to have more depth to them, but more of them bug the hell out of me.

The Aiel stomp the Mud People; I give you 20 to 1 odds.

3 to 2 on the Children of the Light. Too many undisciplined thugs amongst the Blood of the Fold.

2 to 1 on the Imperial Order. Seanchan are too arrogant and tactically inept, despite their tame wizards.

3 to 1 on the Mriswith. Can’t hit what you can’t see.

Even odds. A stand-up fight.

There’s one Confessor and a jillion Aes Sedai. Sorry, Kahlan, you’re toast. 50 to 1 odds on the Aes Sedai.

But if we’re talking a one on one match, the Amyrlin vs. the Mother Confessor, well that’s different. Pine needles drop to the ground for no apparent reason, and Kahlan wins. 3 to 2 odds on the Mother Confessor.

5 to 4 odds on the Aes Sedai. Average level of experience and skill looks slightly higher. 2 to 1 odds there’s no fight; they join forces and look for the nearest male magical talent to boss around.

Even odds. Again, 2 to 1 odds that no fight occurs; they’re too stupid to find each other in a 10 by 10 cage.

Assuming the Mord-Sith have their tame magic talents with them? 2 to 1 on the Mord-Sith. When a sul’dam gets hit, she drops; when a Mord-Sith gets hit, she smiles and asks if that’s the best you can do.

7 to 1 odds on the Forsaken. Darken Rahl is about as powerful as Lanfear or Ishamael; he can’t take all 7 at once.

Siuan Sanche? It’s been too long since I read the books…

5 to 4 odds on Lan. Likeliest to win by cleaving Chase in the first two seconds while Chase tries to figure out which weapon to use.

No contest. 50 to 1 odds on Emperor Jagang. That guy scares me.

5 to 4 odds on Rand. Flip flop to 2 to 1 on Richard if Richard lives long enough to get in sword range.

And additional matches:

Min vs. Du Chaillu

Terry Goodkind vs. Robert Jordan.

**

Well, ok. There are a hell of a lot more Aiel. If it’s one on one, say Rhuarc vs. Chandalen, I say it’s even.

**

If the Aes Sedai manage to capture Richard, Kahlan goes Con Dar and subverts a bunch of them. 5 to 1 on Aes Sedai in that case.

**

7 to 6 on Darken Rahl. While the Forsaken are arguing about who gets to make Darken bow before the Dark One, Darken summons some underworld creatures to help him out.

**

Siuan is the Amyrlin Seat, and Zedd is the First Wizard. Even odds; they both manipulate everyone else into fighting for them, it comes to a draw, and then they join forces and bicker constantly.

**

5 to 4 odds on Lan. Likeliest to win by cleaving Chase in the first two seconds while Chase tries to figure out which weapon to use.

Yeah, but Chase wears so many weapons it counts as armor. Lan’s Warder cloak distracts Chase, but Chase pulls Rachel out of his pocket and she zaps Lan with her fire wand. Even odds.

**

I give it even odds. They are both dreamwalkers, although of a different stripe. Egwene also has her magic, but Jagang could crush her in his hand if he got close enough.

**

No contest. Jordan is a decorated Vietnam Vet. Maybe Goodkind gets lucky and scores a hit with a replica of the Sword of Truth. 50 to 1 on Jordan.
