Just noticed that my favorite candy bars (Mounds) are no longer "Peter Paul"who were these guys?
Guy. Peter Paul Halajian - founder of the eponymous Peter Paul Manufacturing Co. Eventually acquired by Hersheys.
Who else remembers the Peter Paul “No Jelly” (quickly renamed “Peanut Butter”) bar?
And what else did Peter Paul make, besides Mounds, Almond Joy, and No Jelly/Peanut Butter?
There was the Caravelle bar, which I remember liking. It’s been a long time since the '70s, but ISTR that it was similar to (and better than) the Nestlé $100,000 Bar that is now known as the 100 Grand Bar.
They also made the York Peppermint Patties after purchasing York in the early 1970s.
I only know of it from the awesome Vincent Price commercial.
…and this will be the 3rd time in the week since I first saw the commercial that I can organically post the link in a discussion…
And you thought of this because you were watching the Great Pumpkin special! Right?
I like the guy who called the voluptuous lady parts of Helene Fourment (the 16 year old wife of renaissance artist Peter Paul Rubens) “Peter Paul’s Mounds”
Painted her a lot, he did. He said that when she was naked “she would not blush.”

In high school one of my friends liked to wear a grey T-shirt with the Mounds logo (text) on it.
She was not busty.
I was at a grocery store in the candy aisle, where they have the bags of miniature bars that you give out on Halloween. Down the aisle a little I see a bag of Spunow bars. “Hmm, never heard of them before, must be new. I wonder what’s in them.” I walk over, and…
…it’s a bag of Mounds that someone has put on the shelf upside-down.
I can’t not call them “Spunow” now.
Years ago, Scientific American ran an article about perception that contained an anecdote about the author being briefly puzzled at the sight of a box of Spep Oop on the store shelf.
And for any readers who don’t remember the product…
Its full name was “peanut butter with no jelly”
I like that. Looked it up, and it’s Martin Gardner. Good company to be associated with.
However, I also did a search on “spunow” and it’s in Urban Dictionary, but with a date of February of this year. I posted about this on Facebook in 2012. I claim precedence! I’m pissed.
The commercials for those were always disappointing to me. There’s never been a shortage of peanut butter-based candies. I would have LOVED a jelly-based candy bar. The oozy, sticky kind of jelly, like I would make a PB&J with, not jujubes or gumdrops.
Peter Paul also had an Almond Cluster bar. I remember buying them at Boy Scout camp, and it was the only place I ever saw them, which was disappointing, because I recall it being very good.
So, Peter Paul had all the coconut/almond combinations covered: Mounds, Almond Joy, and Almond Cluster. Here is a very 70’s commercial for it: Vintage Old 1970's Peter Paul Candy Almond Cluster Candy Bar Commercial - YouTube
Does anyone else remember the limited edition milk chocolate Mounds and dark chocolate Almond Joy?
From the 60s through the 80s, they made the PowerHouse Bar. It didn’t, however, originate with the company. PowerHouse Bars were originally made by the Walther H. Johnson Candy Company until 1966 when Peter Paul bought them.
At one time, I lived near the Peter Paul factory in Naugatuck, Ct. It was a sad day when it was sold, and they moved operations to Virginia. The building sat vacant for years, and now it’s been demolished. We all knew someone that worked there, and nearly everyone in town had been in the plant for a tour.
Didn’t the $100,000 bar used to have crisped rice in it? My son had one for the first time the other day and asked what the little round things were. I told him “rice crispies”. He said “no, these aren’t rice crispies”.
I told him to read the wrapper and he still said “nope, no rice crispies.”
I checked and sure enough, they’re now little cookie balls.
When did this happen?
