When does Grand Theft Auto: Vice City come out for the PC?

I saw an ad in one of the computer gaming mags that said it was NOW AVAILABLE ON PC, but haven’t seen it in any stores.

Not that I’m anxious for it to come out or anything.

I have a life.

Sort of.

Ok. I have no life. I can’t even go and rent a used one.

I went to buy it today and was told May 14th (Canada).

Gameplay.com says 13th for U.S. and 16th for Europe.

Well, the game has been “out” since Friday .

The release date for the general public is May 14.

I was in Best Buy the other day and was rummaging the PC Games aisle, like you do, and saw Vice City! In a pretty pink box with all the character pictures on it and everything. I was so happy I didn’t even look for a price I was ready to just toss it in the basket and head on out of there when, across the top of the box, in tiny letters it said, “Pre order Copy Only. Game Not Included” WTF is that all about???

Thanks to this thread, I now know: Two more days! Two more days!

And I also HATE it when a store covers it’s walls with “pre-order only” boxes. I don’t make it a habit to follow game release dates, but I usually I have a general idea about when something I want is supposed to come out. If I’m walking by and see a bunch of boxes I’ll think “Cool, GameX is out!”. Only to find out that I must wait another week, month, etc. What the store is trying to do is generate an extra week or two weeks of foot traffic based on the excitement of the new game. What they end up doing is just ticking off a bunch of people who wanted to buy the game.

Darby, they’re preselling the game so that when it comes in you’re certain to have a copy. The assumption is that it will be flying off the shelves, so this way you can make sure you’ll be able to get one without having to wait for the next, or third, or … restocking of the game.

And, as a bonus, they throw in a “Free 80’s Vice City Soundtrack” in the pre-sell box.

The $10 you spend on the pre-order is applied to the cost of the game.

And yes, I have the box sitting next me.

Yeah, that’s the idea about pre-order. But I got my ‘special edition’ of ‘Zelda Windwaker’ without preordering. I just walked into the store and said - ‘By the way, is Windwaker out yet?’ Yeah, it was released today. So I asked to get a copy, and the clerk called out to the guy working behind the counter: ‘What do we do if a costumer doesn’t have a pre-order slip?’ The answer was: ‘We have too many as it is. Just sell him one.’

It’s not even a guarantee. It’s just a way to create a buzz and spike sales when the game is released. That way, it goes to he top of the sales list and generates more buzz and more sales. You, the customer, have nothing to gain.

Preordering certainly doesn’t hurt. The cost goes towards the expense of the game and you usually get a little bonus for signing up.

Those of us who tried getting Vice City when it first came out on PS2 without a preorder know what can happen. It took me weeks to get mine. All stores in the area would order hundreds at a time and would sell out the morning they came in. Insane.

Buy it at Best Buy this week if you can. You get a $10 BB gift card if you do.

** Amp ** What?! I picked up my pre-order at BB this weekend and got no such thing!

First off all thinksnow, darn you to heck for getting this game a whole two days earlier than me!

Second, I just picked up my copy a few minutes ago, I would have done it when BB opened up but no, my supervisor wanted me here on time, and when the guy rang me up he didn’t give me the gift card. I masked him about it and he had no idea what I was talking about so I told him to look at this week’s circular where the offered was mentioned and got it no problem. Although, it did start Sunday so if you picked it up Friday or Saturday you may be out of luck.

Question: Is it worth buying it with my current system?

Pentium III-1000 MHz
GeForce MX 32
512 MB of RAM
All the hard drive space you’d ever need
Windows XP Pro

Or will it be deathly choppy and not worth it?

Rickjay, I installed it today. You can scale the video down to 640x480x16 bit. These are the specs from the Readme file:

Minimum:
800 MHz Intel Pentium III/800 MHz AMD Athlon/1.2GHz Intel Celeron/1.2 GHz AMD Duron processor
128 MB of RAM
8 speed CD / DVD drive
915 MB of free hard disk space
32 MB video card with DirectX 9.0 compatible drivers (“GeForce” or better)

Recommended:
Intel Pentium IV/AMD Athlon XP processor
256(+) MB of RAM
16 speed CD / DVD drive
1.55 GB of free hard disk space
64(+) MB video card with DirectX 9.0 compatible drivers (“GeForce 3” / “Radeon 8500” or better with DirectX Texture Compression support)
DirectX 9.0 compatible sound card with surround sound

Hey RickJay my comptuer is basically like yours, except my video card is GeForce2 Go with 32mb and I’ve only got 256mb of RAM.
I can run VC at 800x600 with 16 bit colors and it works fine.
It runs much better than GTA3 pc, which on this same system I had to run in 640x480.

It actually runs better than GTA3? That’s good news! I can barely run GTA3 and was worried about GTA VC.

Well, I just finished the first three or so missions and my initial impressions are satisified. Of few minor complaints like a car poppinf up out of no where and some artifacts popping up but so far fun. Anyone figure out how to do a wheelie on the motorcycle yet?

I can’t wait for tomorrow! And I can’t get to BB till after work! Then they’ll probably be sold out!!! WHAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

YellowTail, I was in WalMart on unrated shopping business and I saw that they had about, oh, 30 copies on the shelves there.

I get the feeling they are well prepared for this release.

unrated=unrelated.

Yeah, the Best Buy I went to had tons on the shelves and I was the only who picked up a copy when I was there.
