So I was watching the new Emirates Airlines advert on TV, and this was their, errm, punchline… and it really got me thinking!
And you know what? The best I could come up with was the time when I rode my friends Honda CBR400RR for the first time 2 years ago. It was my first time on anythign remotely like a sports bike, and it was the most exhilarating experience - my damn knees went weak (I know, because when I got off it, I had to lean on a car for a while!)!!
But after then - nada, zip, nothing!
So when was the last time you did something for the first time??
A lot of firsts for me this past year—I got my dream job, married and moved to a small city. I delivered a newborn alone this fall and I circulated in surgery alone last month. Yesterday I was just about to do my first blood draw on a newborn but got to experience another first—convincing a pediatrician to admit this baby into the Special Care Unit on my say-so alone. No labs to back me up, only subtle signs and symptoms and a feeling that this baby didn’t “feel” right to me. And he listened.
I took a new class at the gym on Monday. I had been watching the boxing-aerobics for about a year now through the window, but never worked up the courage to try it. When they mixed up the schedules for the new year, there it was, in my old class’ time spot.
Darn straight! You have one to go to in Philadelphia next September. You try missing that one, and I’ll fly to Missoula to kick your butt! (You ARE a member of the wedding party, after all!)
Ah, yes to prove once again for the millions that read this that *I have no life and am dang proud of it *, I made *Creamy Spinach soup * and *home made apple pie * from *scratch *.
Not on the same day. Either way, i was pooped after such domesticity.
Well, last week was just full of firsts. I slept with a married man for the first time, had a Monsoon (lots of rum with a splash of grapefruit juice) and a Big Gulp full of White Russian for the first time, and pissed in the bushes in the middle of an urban area for the first time. Oh, yeah, and I got married for the first time. I keep forgetting about that.
The last really big, memorable thing was going surfing last August. (I will go back some weekend, it was wonderful).
I took my first real vacation ever in September.
I beaded my first necklace a few days before Christmas.
Since then, not much.
Yesterday. A person who I was teaching in my martial arts class told me that the only reason that he hadn’t given up in frustration was my teaching, patience and encouragement. That’s a first (felt kind of good too).
Sex, engagement, hair salon (didn’t get my hair cut, no worries), two car breakdowns, … and tonight B and I will be eating a chicago-style pizza. I saw them in the grocery store and almost drooled right on the spot.
Okay, don’t laugh but I roller-skated backwards for the first time in my life and it was exhilerating! My penultimate skate session was a roller-skating party in the sixth grade. I always envied the kids that could go backwards.
Fast forward to last week, 38 year-old John C. goes rollerskating with gal-pal. Just for the hell of it, I jumped up and spun 180 degrees, landed, and kept moving. I guess the fear is gone.
My word, lots of excitement in this thread. Uh, I really can’t remember very many “firsts” this year. I ate Chilean food, flew to Iowa (big thrill, of course), became a SDMB addict, and I think I got married a couple of weeks ago, which means that I wore cream-coloured shoes for the first time.
Congratulations on all the wedding-related stuff, guys. Getting married is fun. As soon as Mr. Lissar has pics up at his website I’ll start a thread.
The last major event was last January (a year from this past Wednesday, actually), when I flew in an airplane for the first time. In April, it will be the first time I’ve flown on a jet. I suspect it won’t be nearly as fun.
In December, I got my very first utterly horrid picture for a government document. My driver’s license picture looked better than these passport pictures do. Ugh. I was having a bad appearance day.
