I just browsed at the Straightdope store. And apparently the last time Mr. Adams published a book was in 1998. I realize he doesn’t publish books too often. And what with the internet community we have here at straightdope.com, I may be one of the last people who even cares if he publishes another book. But what the heck. Does anyone know when, if ever, he might publish another compilation book? (Please feel free to speculate if you don’t know for sure.)
It’s been said by those who might know, in other threads, that the next book won’t come out until they sell a lot more of the books that are already out, and still just sitting there in the warehouse, waiting to be purchased by us SDMB’ers to use as gifts, or to round out our own SD collections.
Not enough sacrifices at the altar, apparently. If you already own all his books, send someone you care about a complete set at the next gift-giving time!
One problem is that the columns are available in print and on the website, so I’ve already read them. The nice thing about the books was that the column was new to me, so this was nothing I’d previously read. (Also, I suspect that the first book or two included only the best columns while the later books were less selective. Not to mention that Cecil Adams seems to have less bite lately.)
Actually, I’d much rather have a book with the staff reports, as they’ve been a lot more interesting the last few years. I’m always let down when the notification e-mail on Fridays don’t mention a staff report, but a “Straight Dope Classic”.
I’ve got all of the Straight Dope books Heck, I never even knew of Cecil’s existence until I bought the very first book. I initially picked it up because I’m a trivia whore.
If you haven’t read the last book that came out, the end of every chapter features a portion of the original Straight Dope messageboard. It’s amazing to discover who’s been here since the very beginning…TubaDiva, CK Dexter Haven, JillGat…
Part of the problem with Cecil putting out another book is that the last couple didn’t sell well (hence the comment about, “Not until we sell off the ones we have.”) Part of the problem is that Cecil himself doesn’t do much work on the books – it’s basically an editing job, since the columns are written, so falls in Ed Zotti’s lap, and Ed has been busy with other stuff. And, I suspect, part of the problem is who would buy something they can read for free online? (Well, I would, because the books are on the shelf in the bathroom and my computer isn’t. Yet.)
