When you absolutely, positively have to get there NOW!

Would you rather have the ability to safely teleport to anyplace on Earth you have already visited by conventional methods, or the ability to safely use line-of-natural-sight teleportation?

As long as it was safe to do so, I’d be willing to be teleported to any place on Earth, including to the other side or the poles. I haven’t visited too many places, though.

Not one of the two choices-sorry.

Under option 1, if I later travel to new places by conventional means, will those be added to my list of teleportation destinations? Or is the list fixed to placed I’d visited before I receive this teleportation ability?

Also, what does “line of natural sight” mean? Can I teleport to the Moon? ISS? Can I teleport to the Moon, and then to any other part of the world I can see from there?

I’ll take the line of sight. There are too many places that I really only want to get to once and the difference in teleporting to say Flagstaff and then having to walk or bus to the Grand Canyon versus teleporting up 1,000 and then basically flying to the Grand Canyon seems like the flight would be faster since I could cover 3 miles per jump. My travel time would be in the 3 miles per second range sound I could circle the earth in about 2.5 hours.

But line of sight might essentially be this, depending on the specifics (see the previous teleport to the moon and back example). If each teleport is quick and doesn’t require heavy equipment I could essentially get anywhere taking instant 20 km steps at a time.

One thing I’d need to know is how often can you teleport. If it was something like once a day or even once per hour, then line of sight wouldn’t be as useful and I’d probably go with the anywhere I’ve been before option.

But if it was pretty much instantaneous and you could teleport as many times as you wanted (bam -> bam -> bam -> bam), then I’d go with the line of sight option.

If you’ve previously traveled there by conventional means. Have you been to the Moon or the ISS before?

One point in favor of the “anywhere you’ve visited” option is that you wouldn’t have to do your traveling all at once. Got a spare hour to kill? Teleport to somewhere on the extreme edge of your range, and walk five miles. Pop back for lunch at home (or at your favorite restaurant, or at the home of a friend who’s a great cook), then pop back to the edge for another few miles. Given time, you’d eventually stock up a list of everywhere you’d ever intend to go.

Another question: What happens to your velocity when you teleport? Given that we’re teleporting “safely”, I think that means that your velocity is set to zero relative to the closest part of the Earth, at your arrival point. This opens up a new possibility: Take one long-distant flight, that passes over a variety of points of interest. After you land and add your destination to your list, teleport to where the airplane was, directly above some other interesting point. Let yourself fall almost to the ground, then teleport back home. Teleport to that point just above the ground, and drop the rest of the way. Now that location is on your list, too. Repeat for all of the other interesting points you passed over, and you get a whole line of destinations, from one flight.

So, with option “A” I’d be able to teleport from bed to my toilet? Trying to make a fully informed decision.

:eek:BOOM! Mind blown.

Now that Chronos has enlightened me, I’ll take that one.

Dude, I like the way you think, we need to listen to some Zep and smoke a bone and discuss the meaning of life or sumpthin .:smiley:

What would really be useful would be the ability to teleport the contents of your bladder to the toilet, without ever getting out of bed.

Take one long distance flight…and you can teleport from that plane to any place you have line of sight of. Now, if you want to teleport to the air you see outside your window, go for it…but good luck getting your bearings before hitting the ground. If you are doing the “Travel by hitting places you’ve already been to”, they have to be places you have physically been to before, not just near.

Adding my name to the list of those who feel that the line-of-sight choice depends on whether the next hop is instantaneous or not.

I rather have a V-8.

As long as it takes to focus in on the target and make a conscious decision.

I beg to differ. I did say I haven’t been to too many places, but I’d be willing to teleport to any place I’ve visited, in one jump no matter what the distance.

Sorry, I misunderstood you to say that you would travel to the poles.

My fault. Of course I’d be willing to teleport to the poles if I’d ever been there, but I haven’t. But I’ve been to Niagara Falls, so I’d be willing to teleport directly there.

I thought that was only a condition of the first choice.
