When your parents get old

I wonder about this as well. I am an only child and my parents live abroad. They do live near my dad’s siblings and the rest of the family. They are in their 60s and financially are in a good place. They have pensions and real estate and money stashed away. I guess if Dad predeceased then Mom would move up here.

I would hope that they wind up like my grandma who is in her late 80s at this point. She lives in her own home with four uncles and aunts who live within a five minute walk from her home and the rest of her children living within a one hour drive.

She is in very good health and makes the trip to visit the kids who live in the city regularly. She still cooks for herself and the rest of the family and runs her house fairly well.

This is me, except for being buried in the chicken yard.
My mom is 97, and lives alone in a huge house just down the road from us. My sisters and my family check in on her constantly, do her shopping, mow her lawn, etc. My husband is a saint, and is endlessly patient with her questions that he’s answered before – she’s blind, nearly deaf, and her memory is going. We’re trying to get her to sell the house and go into an assisted living facility, but no luck. If she ends up in a nursing home I imagine she’ll just give up.
