When's the last time you spent the *whole day* watching TV?

I used to do this occasionally in high school and maybe college. Go from early morning news, to game shows (Price is Right!), to noontime news, to afternoon reruns (Chips!), to 5 o’clock news, to 6 o’clock “news magazine”, to PRIME TIME! to evening news to the Tonight Show, to David Letterman and finally some midnight movie.

Oh, and Friday night went on into Solid Gold, Dance Fever and some hourlong video show.

I can’t imagine doing that now, though, or any time in the past 15 years. Not just through lack of time, but I don’t see anything much on that I like any more. I could pop in a couple of DVDs or play a PC game all day, but it’s not quite the same . . .

I think I only did this a few times in uni, when I was sick and just thinking about a textbook made my head hurt. I was lucky that my school had two student-run movie channels that chose movies based on what we requested, so the quality was pretty high. Once, I was basically bedridden for three days straight and drifting in and out of consciousness through multiple showings of Being John Malkovich, American Beauty, Star Trek movies, Princess Mononoke, Glory, Heat… There were more, but I forget now. Not exactly what you’re looking for, I know, but I remember taking a break from movies to watch the 6-8 PM Friends/Seinfeld re-runs, and then Nick At Nite (midnight+) to watch Cosby Show, Mash, Family Ties, etc.

Good times, I guess. Ugh. No, I felt like shit.

I used to do that when I was a kid, especially during summer break when all my friends would take off on vacation. The last time I watched tv all day must have been on 9/11, but that was basically a single event, I wasn’t channel surfing.

If I’m doing something around the house I’ll leave the TV on but won’t necessarily watch it unless I hear something compelling enough to drop everything (I’ve always been like that, btw).

But to just sit there and watch all day/night? Can’t do it, even if I’m sick. In the latter case, the noise will lull me to sleep more often than not.

one weekend they had a lord of the rings marathon on a cable station. the next weekend spike had a star wars marathon.

both were enjoyable.

I’ve never spent a whole day watching television.

After I had emergency appendix surgery a few years ago. Other than Herculean efforts to visit the bathroom, I couldn’t move around at all, so I watched TV from the moment I woke up until I went to bed that night. I mowed down everything saved on the DVR, then marched through everything I could stomach that was free on the On Demand channels.

Good Lord - I can’t even think of the last time I watched a single programme from beginning to end, let alone watched the one after it…

Maybe when VCRs first came out, there would have been a couple of weekends where we’d watch 5 - 6 movies back to back, but it had more to do with getting incapacitated in the coldest part of winter in Edmonton. Broadcast television - never. So, yeah, make it about 27 years ago. I couldn’t begin to contemplate it now.

A couple weekends ago, the LOTR trilogy was on and since I was going through a lot of old papers (open, shred, recycle, repeat), I just sat there working (w/some eating and internet surfing) while the whole thing played out. My wife was out of town, natch.

September 11, 2001.

Last year, during the NBA playoffs. In the first round when they would have 4 games on during a weekend. I suspect that I’ll be doing it this season too.

Heh. I watched the recent LOTR trilogy, too, sick with a cold. It had been ages since I did anything like that.

July 2, 2005. I spent pretty much the whole day watching the Live 8 concerts.

I’ve never spent an entire day watching TV, ever. There’s nothing on worth watching for the most part, IMHO.

Today, and I’m not done yet. Set went on at 3am and is still on. I can be very lazy.

The `90s. Saturday. Saturday morning cartoons to SNICK.

I’m one of the biggest lazy-asses in my house, but even I have to turn off the set and get up and walk around for a bit. I can do it when I’m sick, though. The last time I was sick enough to be in bed all day was around…March of '08, I believe. How it Works is a pretty relaxing “sick” show, though if you miss one step in the “making of” process, you tend to get rather lost.

A few days last month, I got the Aussie soap “Prisoner” (“Prisoner: Cell Block H”) on DVD and I have had quite a few marathons a couple nearly 24 hours while trying to watch the whole series, all 692 episodes.

Probably sometime in Clinton’s first term.
