Where are my cookies hiding?

I am handling systems for sales in my hotel and I was supposed to do an audit for corporate to look at computer browser histories and cookies. (it’s actually stated in the agreement you sign, before you get internet access, that they do audits of this kind)

Now I don’t really care where people go but I conducted my audit as they instructions say…

Now here’s the question I looked up my account on eBay from work and in my cookie file I had one on the c drive under windows/cookies.
However today I did a “find” for eBay (I was looking up something else) and there were cookies in 3 other c drive folders for eBay so I started looking for other sites I’d been on and found cookies in weird places.

I thought (wrongly apparently) that cookies went into one folder. So where could these be? Are sites allowed to put them anywhere?

(and yes I know you can easily turn off your cookies and delete them as well as your history…That’s how I know who was looking at the naughty sites there cookies were clean.)

Try the Temporary Internet Files. That’s where mine go.

CAREFUL! We don’t want to learn from this!(Calvin and Hobbs)

Awww, I was hoping to get a snack…I love cookies, especally sugar cookies…

I always just run a search for “cookie” and it gets several cookie.txt files, as well as a couple folders named “cookie”. Deleteing those seems to clear out all my cookies. I suspect mine end up all over because I switch between four or five browsers to check website compatibility, and each of 'em tucks the cookies in a different place.

All you need to do is go to start --> settings --> control pannel

on the control pannel double click on either internet or internet options (depends on your version of internet explorer)

on that screen there will be a section for temp. internet files – choose settings – then delete everything under view objects and view files.

Well, my cookies are between my… oh, you’re not using “cookies” as a euphemism for … ahem, never mind.

Wrong thinking is punished, right thinking is just as swiftly rewarded. You’ll find it an effective combination.

Where your cookies are depends on which browser you are using.

I use both IE5 and Netscpae, each of which uses different ways of caching internet files and storing cookies.

IE5 by default uses the C:\WINDOWS\TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES folder for caching, and usually stores cookies in both that folder and also in C:\WINDOWS\COOKIES. IE5 stores all browsed data in the cache, regardless of whether it has been saved to a file or not.

Netscape, by contrast, sets up its own folder system; by default this is located under C:\PROGRAM FILES\NETSCAPE. The internet cache is a sub-folder: C:…\USERS\CACHE. Cookies are stored as a text file (COOKIES.TXT) in the \USERS folder.
COOKIES.TXT is a standard text file which can be edited or deleted, despite the warning at the top of the file.

As to other browsers, maybe another SD user has some answers…

Knock softly but firmly, 'cause I like soft firm knockers…

Mark, try Norton Clean Sweep. I just used it yesterday on cookies, I found almost, get this, 1000 cookies, of that, about 475 I took out with Clean Sweep.

Or get a cookie manager, from download.com, shareware site ya know ?

Well that explains that. I use 4 different browsers. Thanks guys. Why do I do this, I get bored.
