Where can I buy ketchup that's not so darn sweet?

Well, since summer is coming up, if you have canning equipment and a garden, one can make ketchup to suit.

I have tried the Heinz organic ketchup and it was pretty good- still kind of sweet but not like regular ketchup. As for putting stuff on eggs I like Tapitillo hot sauce to make them kicky

You could always chop a regular tomato. Or use canned concentrate.

Sho’ nuff! I browsed in the spaghetti sauce area this evening, and had no problem finding sauces without sweeteners. Not all of them, of course, but they were there. Didn’t write down any brand names, but I think that Prego and/or Ragu, for example, had some sauces without added sweeteners.

American ketchup is sweet? Don’t go to continental Europe then… I swear German ketchup is just American ketchup with 75% more sugar added. When my ketchup-addicted (and greatly homesick) friend James will spit out a french fry at a Munich McDonald’s, you know it’s too sweet!

Anyway, if you want something to put on fries, try this - it’s the nectar of the gods!

Actually, Ketchup is an American adaptation of an Asian sauce called Ketjap, which is supposed to be sweet, as sweet flavors with meats are common in Asian cuisines.

If you don’t like it, don’t eat it!

From the Recipe Goldmine!

Heinz Ketchup
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder

Combine all ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Whisk until smooth. When mixture comes to a boil, reduce heat and slimmer for 20 minutes, stirring often. Remove pan from heat and cover until cool.

Chill and store in a covered container.

To make it less sweet, just reduce the corn syrup. I’d keep the sugar, though.

Steel’s make sugar free sauces and ketchup available online and I hope you all know ketchupworld which has every ketchup imaginable. The banana ketchup is unbelievably good.

Strangely enough I found the idea of ketchup on scrambled eggs repulsive - the only sauces I have ever put on them are tarragon hollandaise or hot sauce (DL Jardine’s Blazing Saddles or Tabasco). However I would not dream of eating fried eggs without a drizzle of tomato sauce. And poached eggs I never put anything on. Weird.

I should have come clean. I am often desperate enough to eat hotdogs, and I use ketchup on them. And I enjoy them greatly. Good on fishsticks too. And baloney. But not eggs. Oh no, not eggs.

I am curious about where you got the Ketjap history of Ketchup. After reading this thread, I Googled the history of ketchup. The Ketjap story was part of a very long, detailed history of ketchup that was… completely fabricated. At the end of it, there was a disclaimer pointing out that it was all a joke. Continuing my search, I found what looked like a reputable food website that was obviously directly plagiarized from the joke site (without credit), but was treated as the true story. The same story in fact showed up on many sites. Had I not happened to see the original joke, I might have taken it for fact. However, I am not sure if EVRYTHING was joke, or just parts of it.
