Where can I buy Tartex pate / spread in the U.S ?

If you’re just reading this out of boredom or curiosity, Tartex is a yeast based vegetable spread. It’s very popular among vegans and vegetarians and is commonly found in northern europe (Scandinavia, Germany and the U.K in particular). Over there, it’s available at around $2.50 a tube or as low as $1.50 if you buy in larger quantities.

My swedish vegetarian SO loves the stuff and I’d like to buy some for her but all I’ve been able to find so far were a couple online U.K stores that charge about $3.55 per unit. That’s fine with me but shipping is very pricey and even if I buy a dozen of them to mitigate it, the final price per unit ends up somewhere around $7.50 (triple retail price) which is too expensive even for an independently wealthy oil mogul such as myself. The fact that the last sentence is a lie and that I am, in fact, a famished college student doesn’t help.

So anyways, I know that the odds of me getting any help with this are negligible but I figured I’d give it a shot anyways seeing as I have time to kill in between classes.

In any case, thank you for taking the time to read this.

PS: I’m looking for the tube kind (200grams a tube)

If you have a Costplus World Market nearby they might have it. I know they have Vegemite (yuck) and Marmite (haven’t tried it, but I’m assuming Yuck) so they may have Tartex too.

Have you tried it? What does it taste like?

Right here.

Does that sound like a feminie hygiene product to anyone else?

It tastes good actually. I wouldn’t give up regular pates for it though

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, that store charges 5 bucks for a 125 gram can (as opposed to the 200 gram tubes I was looking for). doing some math and factoring in shipping cost gives us something around $7.63 for a “virtual tube of 200 grams” which is even worse than the UK prices I mentionned earlier.

The reason for this is that the cans are a different mix than the tubes. These are actually organic as well which explains the premium pricing (they’re still overpriced of course).

So to recap, I’m looking for something cheaper than $7.50 shipped for a tube or less than $4.68 shipped for a can. Total price ought to be less than $90 including shipping to zipcode 33071.

I don’t actually expect anyone to go look but I enjoy doing simple arithmetic.

Would an IKEA store in the U.S. have it in their food marketplace? You could try looking there.

There are no IKEA stores around here so the point is moot. They probably don’t have it anyways.

There are several versions of Tartex Pate, so you may have to figure out if there is a favorite, but why don’t you surprise your gal and make yeast pate from scratch?
VEGAN PATE

1 can garbanzos, drained, rinsed, and mashed with a potato masher
1/2 cup + 1 tbsp whole wheat flour
1/2 cup Nutritional Yeast
2 Tbsp. lemone juice
1 grated raw potato
4 stalks of green onion, thinly sliced
1 grated stalk of celery
1 grated carrot
1 1/2 cups warm water
Thyme, basil, sage, salt, pepper
(1 tsp. of each or more to taste)

Mix all ingredients together. Pour into a 9" square pan - It looks a bit
soupy but don’t worry. Bake at 350 degree F. for one hour (+15-20 minutes)
until golden brown. The top will be firm, but inside will still be liquidy

  • this is OK, as it cools to a pate-like consistency.

Refrigerate and serve cold. Use this on crackers, or as a spread for
sandwiches.
