My boyfriend went to the Dominican Republic several years ago and ever since he’s longed for their ketchup. He tells me that the stuff he had was made by Heinz and looked just like a regular bottle of Heinz ketchup, but that it tasted totally different - more vinegary or something. Googling hasn’t found it for me, and anyway if it looks the same how would I know I was ordering the right thing?
So: for one thing, is the Heinz sold in the DR truly different?
My first thought is that I would buy a bottle of Heinz, a bottle of vinegar, a supersized McDonalds fries, and spend an hour trying to recreate it. But I may have too much time on my hands.
I heard that Coca-Cola made in Mexico is different than the Coca-Cola here in the US. It understand that in Mexico they use sugar while in the US they use high fructose corn syrup and that is what makes the difference.
Maybe it’s the same kind of thing in the DR. Contacting Heinz, as Magiver said, is a good idea. Or, trying to find a food market in a Dominican neighborhood.
