Where do I get a hair style/makeover? NY-Philly corridor women?

I live in Trenton. I am between jobs, but expect to start another job soon. Although business casual is the usual dress style in my field (programming), I generally prefer to wear suits, as I find them just as comfortable and far more becoming than casual clothing. I am, by the way, a woman.

I’d like to take some of the free time I have at the moment and go to a really good hair stylist - one of those people who looks at you and knows what will work well for you and what won’t. Possibly the same thing for make-up, although the hair is the important thing. I’m 47 (I probably look about 10 years younger, but I’m a little overweight - not huge), and I couldn’t care less about fashion as long as people don’t stare and laugh at me on the street; I just want a hair style that lets me look as good as it is possible for me to look. Currently my hair is layer-cut, and ranges from ear length to jawbone. So there’s not a lot of length, but there is something to work with.

I won’t go so far as to say money is no object, but let’s just say that I would be willing to spend a fair amount for a one-shot deal. Once I had a really good style, I assume it could be maintained by a local, competent hair-cutter. As my hair is naturally sort of golden-blonde, I’m assuming at this point that color won’t be an issue, although since my hair is very straight and fine naturally (I have an old-ish perm), a new perm may be in order.

Does anyone know someplace in the New York or Philadelphia area (I could take a train to either) or in New Jersey that does really good makeovers that aren’t simply tied to the latest fashion? I’ve done some hunting on the internet, but I have no word of mouth on any of the places I’ve found, so I have no way of knowing if they live up to their own billing or not.

I know this isn’t the typical message board to ask this kind of question on, but it’s the only message board I know, so I’m appealing to Doper women (or men, if they happen to know).

I thank you in advance for any help you may be able to give me.

I’ve been going to the guy who cuts my hair for more than 15 years. It’s now $55 a pop, but my hair (very thick, very straight) always looks great every minute till the next haircut. Having in look good immediately isn’t that hard – having it continue to look good as it grows out is worth $55 (plus $5 to the shampoo woman) to me.

Email me if you’d like his name. He’s in Philly (Chestnut Hill).
