every now and then I put them back in the closet where about half of them fit in one of those hanging shoe holders. then they gradually make their way out again, gradually re-forming the pile.

Work and play shoes in a pile behind the recliner. Flip-flops by the front door. Dress shoes, spares, boots and the rest live in the bedroom closet.
Bottom of my closet.
I do a clothes clear out about once every six months, at which time my shoes all get neatly arranged into regimented rows, and then the organisation gets slowly destroyed over time until there’s just a mass pile at the bottom of the wardrobe.
Except wellies and walking boots, which live in a cupboard under the stairs with all the mucky outdoor dog walking jackets.
We have 3 of these, stacked on top of each other in one corner of the small walk-in closet. The topmost one is his, the other two are mine. They are mostly, but not completely full.
I live alone and LOVE shoes. One room in my house is a closet. I have steel wire Nexel shelving with plastic shoe boxes from The Container Store.
I have a shoe garage in the mud room. It’s a bench, under it is where we kick shoes off. Now that my baby has moved to college the shoe situation has calmed down. Not so many laying allover the house.
Plastic tub in a closet.
I have shoes everywhere… Shoes that don’t get worn on a semi-regular or regular basis are in my BR closet. The heels I wore to a meeting today are in the back seat of my car, but at some point I will bring them in and put them in my closet where they belong. Winter boots and slippers are in my hall closet. When I have ‘tidied’ my current season shoes end up in the hall closet for anywhere to a few hours to a day… But really, current season shoes aka flip flops, running shoes and hiking shoes are kicked off in the entry area. Well, except for the pair that are kicked off at my couch. I keep my every day barn boots and my fancy riding boots at the barn - one pair in my tack cabinet and the other in my horse trailer.
Mine are usually near the front door, or stored away if it’s not the season for a particular pair. I don’t like wearing shoes inside the house.
I have a couple of eight-pocket hanging shoe organizers.
I’m exactly the opposite - I don’t take off my shoes till I head back to bed. Unless I exchange shoes for slippers, but in either event, I’ve always got something on my feet. Guess that’s why just about all of my footwear is in the bedroom.
Next to the front door. I never wear them in the house.
By my bed. Well, the ones I actually wear, anyways. The rest start out in the storage room and then get lost.
This seasons shoes: Most are in a repurposed small bookcase by the back door. The ones I wear most often hang about in the living room along with my slippers. The other season’s shoes live on a couple of shelves in the bedroom along with the ones I wear once in a blue moon but won’t throw away.
