Where have you met your significant others?

Online, but not on a dating site.

Other.

We were both inner-tubing on a river on a hot day near Austin. I think the best way in general to meet people is to get out there and DO things.

My ex-best friend’s ex-wife.

I’ve only ever met dudes online, since I was 15 on BBSes. Weird, but such is the life of a nerd girl.

On reflection, it becomes obvious why I’m not a regular in the dating game. My “Other” scenarios were getting dragged unexpectedly into a late-night parade and walking into the middle of a mugging. Apparently, it generally takes a couple kilocoppolas of drama to get someone to date me. :stuck_out_tongue:

I was in college in the tiny town of Iowa Falls, and supporting myself. Worked at the local gas station, and was checking out all the cute guys that came in. One really tall cutie came in, gorgeous blue eyes, semi-long blond hair, smile that just didn’t stop and a fine ass.

He came back later than night, and a really gorgeously hot blond came in and greeted him. My heart fell into my shoes. I didn’t stand a chance. I’m 5’4", but at the time, I was in reasonable shape, but certainly not model sized. She was everything I’m not. When she said “how you doing big brother”, I almost did a happy dance right there behind the counter. It was his sister, and he was available.

Meet him in 96, started dating, married in 2000 and still putting up with each others bullshit.

Sorry had to share the whole long story, but its a crappy day, and I needed the lift.

First boyfriend, we met at a coffee shop and were together just under a year. 2nd boyfriend I met at a bar. That one night stand lasted almost 4 years. Current boyfriend I met in an AOL chat room and we’ve been together just under 12 years.

Other.

Co-ed dorms in college

I met my wife at the public library.

It wasn’t an out-of-blue, cold meeting thing, though. There was a fundraising event going on that evening at the library. I was invited because I had been contributing money for awhile. My wife-to-be was a volunteer.

Two marriages.

I met my first wife courtesy of Ye Olde Bulletin Board Systems that some of you youngsters may only have heard rumors about.

I met my current wife thanks to these very Straight Dope Message Boards.

It would seem that the internet is my friend.

Thanks all. I enjoyed reading your replies, keep ‘em comin’. SDMB has a frank and diverse group compared to most boards.

I voted “college class” although we never took a class together. He lived across the hall in the dorm.

There were a couple of HS boyfriends previously, but I didn’t even bother to add that in the poll.

Got my GFs from work (co-workers) and friends of friends. Never actually dated anyone I went to school with (high or college).

I also voted for “Other,” as my last GF (now my wife) was family of a friend.

Some friends and I were riding around at 2 am with nothing better to do, as young adults do sometimes. This was back in the stone ages, when has was still under a dollar a gallon, and just riding around wasn’t considered an environment ruining luxury. At any rate, we’re in Georgetown, people watching, when my girlfriend suddenly yells out the window, “hey, [insert name that can be for men but is usually a female name], come meet my friend!” I’m thinking she’s talking about some girlfriend of hers, continue chatting with the other folks in the car.
We pull over so she can talk to her friend, and I’m sitting in the back seat, closest to the street. She says, “Beedubu2, this is [name]. I think you’ll like each other”.
I look up at this sexy, handsome chunk of man candy, and am immediately taken aback. I mean, six feet tall, broad shouldered, thin waisted, beautiful chocolate skin and a devilish grin. “You can’t be [name], you’re a guy!” He chuckles and invites me for a walk. I get my dumbstruck self out of the car, we talk and walk a bit and end up back at the car. We exchange numbers, he kisses me on the cheek, and we agree to talk later.
Well, that afternoon, I broke my foot. Called big sexy, and he’s been taking care of me ever since. By the way, we met 9/11/1993, and enough time has passed that we can successfully celebrate the date without weird looks in restaurants.

To point out, one can meet a person online and not on a dating site… Which is how geneb and I met.

Seventh grade girl sitting behind me in language skills class asked me to walk her home. Went steady 2 years, have been friends ever since, almost 43 years.

High school girl sitting behind me in German class asked me out, date 2 1/2 years untill…

College first semester, girl sitting behind me asked me out. Dated 5 1/2 years, been married almost 31 years. She doesn’t let me take language classes.

What constitutes “online dating”? I met my ex-girlfriend on Usenet and my current girlfriend on Livejournal, but “online dating” to me suggests OKCupid etc.

I selected “other” because it was online but not dating. Met through an online support group for a specific disorder- a place like this except everyone has or pretends to have the same health issue.

I voted “Other” because it was at University, but not in a class, just the same department.

We met at college but didn’t have any classes together. He was a senior PoliSci major and I was a freshman Broadcasting major. We knew each other in passing, through mutual friends. He was dating someone and I was a dippy freshman reveling in my new-found freedom of being away from home.

Fast Forward twenty years, we both go to Homecoming. The weather is rotten, all of the activities have been moved inside so we take a self-guided tour of the campus. We enjoy each other’s company, one thing leads to another and we’re getting married this St Patrick’s Day.
