You took the time to accuse someone else of making a trivial error (being off by two years on when Reagan spoke of the AIDS epidemic), so apparently you think pointing out errors is important. But when your own error is pointed out, rather than saying, “Oh, good lord, that’s embarrassing, I’ll try to do better in the future,” you make excuses for your own behavior.

In fairness, if one examines the edit history of that post, one will find a version with 1987 where 1985 is now. He probably just didn’t double check between reading the post, quoting it, and posting his response, and I edited it in the intervening time. He’s not just bullshitting on this one.
Most of the rest of his response, though? Pretty weak. Again, the Christian right wing in the USA considered AIDS as little more than a cudgel to beat the fags with. The moral majority lied about how contagious AIDS was. They went from “this is god’s curse towards gay people, so why bother trying to treat it?” to “The gays are giving us the plague, we should round them all up!” By the way, that latter opinion? You can still find people who hold it. Guess which religion. Go on. Guess.
As someone who was not around in the 60s, 70s, or 80s, but nonetheless values knowing his history, it’s no question that the majority of the anti-gay animus from the 50s to today came from Christians. It wasn’t the skeptics and freethinkers who were spreading propaganda that we were targeting kids to induct into our sexuality. It was the goddamn moral majority.

Ah, that explains it! I knew I saw the year 1987 in the first edit post. Edit conflicts have happened before, and I was thinking this was the case as well.
While I personally don’t believe that the practice of anal sodomy contributes anything good to society, I’m not against it as long as it’s between two consenting adults (except if its prostitution as I said earlier).
That being said, it’s not fair to blame Christians for the AIDS crisis; yes, at times some people on the Christian right made intemperate statements about God’s wrath and all that, but most of them were genuinely sympathetic to the plight of those suffering from this horrible disease. That’s why Reagan repeatedly increased funding for it, and so did George H.W. Bush after him.
Christian conservatives are not bigots; they just believe in traditional values that have been central to Western civilization for so many generations.
