Where is your favorite place to buy a Shake? What Flavor?

I’ve made Bobby Flay’s version of these at home a few times.

That’s the best kind! We might check that out in a few weeks.

I’ll ask the next time I’m at Sonic. Shakes are currently half price after 7pm. Ends June 2

I’ve never liked shakes. I don’t know when was the last time I had one, probably at least 50 years ago. If something is a drink I want to be able to chug it. If it’s food I want to chew it. Shakes are neither. The texture kind of disgusts me.

So, no favorite place, no favorite flavor.

My favorites in MPS/StP were Bridgeman’s and Porky’s. Here in Toronto, a little malt shop named Bean and Baker that had to close during the Pandemic. I hear it’s reopened as Sweetie Pie, but I haven’t been there yet.

I’ve always preferred plain vanilla malts over most others, except for Dairy Queen’s pineapple and banana. I used to buy one of those every day in MPS when I was riding my bicycle home from my summer job.

Thickshake. Banana. I make my own.

Fading? That makes me sad - I like The Counter. We have one not far from our house, and the burgers are tasty.

I love malts - I have since I was a kid. When I get them (rarely these days) I order them extra-malty.

For fast-food shakes, my favorite is Arby’s chocolate shake. The others I’ve had (McD’s, Burger King mostly) kind of taste the same, but there’s something about the Arby’s one that has a little extra kick. Too bad we only have one Arby’s within driving distance, and judging by how rundown it is, I’m afraid it won’t be there long.

Concretes from a custard shop. Local St. Louis players Ted Drewes and Silky’s are great. Franchise shop Freddy’s is just fine. Usually banana, maybe Reeses’s bits.

The best shake (chocolate) I ever had was at Petrified Forest National Park back when the Rainbow Forest Lodge still had a real soda fountain. It was in the low 100s outside, and just being inside an air-conditioned building was a treat. I grabbed a stool at the fountain, ordered the shake (made with real ice cream) and when the woman delivered it, she handed me the metal mixing cup* as well with half a glass worth of extra deliciousness. To say that it made my day would be a major understatement.

I love chocolate malts, but I only get them as a treat when I’m on road trips. The only place I make of point of stopping at for one is the Snow Cap Drive-In on Route 66 in Seligman AZ. The malts there are good, but it’s really the ambiance (and the practical jokes at the counter) that brings me back year after year.

*It was the only time, before or since, that I have been offered the mixing cup along with the rest of the shake

If you’re ever in Montreal, Café Santropol has (or it did, the last time I was in there) a grenadine milkshake that’ll blow your mind.

ETA: just checked their menu and I don’t see the grenadine shake, but they have a number of others that I can only assume are just as good.

Arbys for their Jamocha shake, Raleys for banana

and St Louisian Shake Shack

Arby’s, jamocha w/no whipped cream.

Dairy Queen, pineapple

If you’re into malt and have a Caribou Coffee nearby (or have a layover in Minneapolis) you have to try one of these. A hot mocha espresso drink with malt powder. A rare guilty pleasure since it’s loaded with calories.

Man, that takes me back! I made so many shakes (and malts) when I was working at restaurants in the late 70’s/early 80’s, and I made them with machines just like that (only bigger, with more mixers).

My MIL used to make chocolate malts for dessert after Sunday dinners, and she used her Kitchenaid mixer rather than a blender. It made me furious when all the ice cream manufacturers made their cartons smaller than a half-gallon, because the reduced amount didn’t quite make enough for everyone.

Nowadays, I’ll get the kid’s size strawberry shake if we get food from a place that serves decent ones. I’m just not up for the mess of making them at home (also, I can see that becoming a bad habit).

YES! Hamilton Beach. I really could have used a multi-headed machine, but I didn’t realize I needed one until later.

Hmmm…checks forum…not politics…lets it go.

I choose Dairy Queen, black cow (vanilla ice cream & chocolate syrup [no rootbeer]) with malted milk. And not overly thick, so you can still suck it through the straw.

Another vote for Arby’s Jamocha shake. My go-to Arby’s meal is a medium roast beef with Arby’s and horsey sauce, an apple turnover, and a Jamocha shake.

Agree! I’ll skip a shake, but never a chocolate malt! In fact, I will get a shake from McDs, BK, etc, bring it home and add my own malt powder to it. Shakes are boring.

Bob & Edith’s – Cherry.

Silver Diner used to do the same thing with root beer.
