Where is your favorite place to buy a Shake? What Flavor?

There’s a new Freddy’s in Durango, which I tried when I was up there working on the house. I wanted to try their shakes (which I don’t usually order, since I don’t need the calories), and I thought they were pretty good, but so thick it was more like soft-serve ice cream. Not that I’m complaining.

Baskin & Robbins, they make the shakes from any of their 31 flavors of hard ice cream and you can add any of their sundae toppings. A close second is Cold Stone, between all the flavors of ice cream and all the available mix ins, there is at least 1000 different flavor combinations. The best milk shake I ever had is no longer available. There use to be a small store in La Grande, Washington, between Tacoma and Mt Rainier National Park on Mountain Highway. They made their own ice cream, there wild blackberry was a huge favorite. I ordered a mixed berry shake, they used their blackberry ice cream and added fresh strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. The only problem with this, if it could be considered a problem, was chunks of berry getting stuck in the straw. The only fix was to pull out the straw and suck out the blockage from the other end.

I used to get a Chocolate Malt with Chocolate Fudge ice cream. Chocolate heaven!

I’ve ordered the same thing for years, but never thought to refer to it as a Black Forest shake. Thanks!

I’ll answer “flavor” first, because that applies to anywhere I can get it: Chocolate MALT with extra-extra malt.
(Now I just doxxed myself for anyone who worked with me in the 70s…)

There’s a breakfast joint right down the street that serves huge scramblers, pancakes larger than the plates, and french toast made by cutting two cinnamon buns in half and butterflying them… and awesome shakes/malts. Even if it’s 7am, you’ll see the waiter stopping by the “Hamilton Beach 40DM 3 Head Triple Malt Milkshake Mixer” machine to grab that cold stainless steel cup on his way to serve most breakfasts.

.

Ok, they deserve to be doxxed: it’s Mickie’s Dairy Bar, kitty-corner from the UW stadium.

Milwaukee?

Del Taco, a Mexican fast food chain that’s mostly in the west coast, Midwest, and Deep South, has alarmingly good strawberry shakes. They put real strawberry pieces in them and serve them with an extra-thick straw that you can suck them up through without the straw getting clogged.

I had a Portillo’s chocolate cake shake once when vacationing in Chicago. They literally take a slice of chocolate cake, frosting and all, and blend it into vanilla ice cream. Truly that is the dessert beverage of the gods.

Bill Gray’s, which is a local burger chain.

Chocolate banana.

When they’re available, it’s Arby’s orange dreamsicle. If it’s out of season, I’ll generally hit DQ for a hot fudge malt, or a peach shake.

dennys does that usually …

that is Me back in the day when "eat this not that " was on the web they’d have the top 10 worst shakes deserts ect and I used them as a menu guide but not the way they intended

but sometimes if I’m taking advantage of Taco Tuesday at del taco I get a mini shake for 1.25 …they’re just enough to say you had a shake but not big enough for my diet gestapo to throw a fit oh for anyone asking “what the hell is a del taco” and they are away better than taco hell usually :

if you can talk them into it get a 50/50 … its half strawberry and half chocolate …

Hard to believe we’re 70 posts in and I’m the first to mention either lime or spearmint milkshakes.

Australia doesn’t really have chain places that make proper milkshakes, its all done by independently run milk bars, which are sort of cafe / burger and fried food place / deli / maybe some groceries. Many were run by Greek and Italian families, with names like the Acropolis and Niagara. Getting hard to find but being able to deliver you a milkshake with their grandparent’s machine is a point of honour.

Madison. Great breakfast joint!

I like Wendys peppermint Frosty when it’s available.

I let them sit and soften. So I can use a straw. It’s almost a milkshake.

I think DQ has pepperment shakes?? I need to ask next time I’m there.

I’ve mentioned before that in 2006, my friend booked blues legend Pinetop Perkins to play his club. He was in his nineties, still performing. The contract stated that Pinetop needed a bodyguard/aid so my friend asked me to do this. I was told to hang out with him and to get him anything he wanted. That had me nervous. I’d gotten weed for various musicians before, but worried the guy might request “companionship” for after the gig or something complicated.

Turns out Pinetop’s only request was for vanilla ice cream, and only if it wasn’t too much trouble! I ran to a mini-mart and bought a quart. I spent the rest of the night before he went on moving his ice cream from the freezer to refrigerator as he allowed it to soften, ate a bit, then returned it to the freezer or refrigerator as he asked. Very cool guy.

(Old Waltons episode reference.)

That’s why they shortened it to DQ. There’s less spelling confusion.

Ever since the DMII I’ve not been big on milkshakes. Although TBH even before the dx I was more of a sundae guy. Hot fudge on chocolate ice cream, add pistachios or peanuts please .

However, my wife and I will occasionally go to a local drive-in that serves mediocre food that for some inane reason my wife actually likes. They have a 50+ ice cream flavor menu and she will usually order a chocolate shake. I’ll usually take a bite (?) of hers. Thats about the extent of my milkshake intake these days.

Tasty, but so salty.

I haven’t had a shake/malt in ages. When we were kids, we always had malts, but they’re not easy to find anymore.

There used to be a place called Clancy Muldoon’s (had two locations?), and my go-to there was the cappuchino shake. So good. They made all their ice cream fresh on the premises, and it was quality.

One of their locations was around the corner from the hospital where my younger sister worked. She worked swing shift, and the nurses would send her out to get them ice cream. That started a dangerous addiction. I still remember the time I was visiting, and we tookd the two dogs and us in her VW Bug during a blinding rainstorm to get some Clancy Muldoon. Yum.

They did that all the time when I was a kid. An old drive-in (Tommy Nye’s) is one where I really looked forward to that extra.
