Where to get furniture in Chicago?

I’m looking for some new furniture. Couches, to be specific. I want to get something that is a few steps up from Ikea, but a step below Crate and Barrel, or a fancy boutique place.

I’m thinking Nebraska Furniture Mart, but the nearest one is in Omaha.

Does anybody know of something similar in Chicagoland?

I like Roy’s Furniture near Fullerton and Sheffield in Lincoln Park. It’s a locally owned business w/ a lot of history. They have really great furniture and their pricing is pretty reasonable. Nothing crazy expensive like Walter E. Smithe or the other high end places.

There is also Harlem Furniture, but I bought a couch from them a couple of years ago and it was a piece of crap. The prices seem decent, but they’re overpriced for the quality of what they sell. They also employ very pushy salespeople that descend on you like vultures the second you start to walk in.

Oh, another place you might want to check out is Cost Plus World Market. A lot of their furniture has that “exotic” imported look but they also have some really nice stuff. Their prices are great too. I’m not sure if their Lincoln Park location (on Broadway, just north of Diversey) is still open but their Evanston location is and is just a short train ride north.

Lastly, you can’t beat Craigslist for finding some excellent deals on furniture from people who are moving but don’t want to take everything with them - especially near the end of the month (and double especially near the end of April and the end of September. May 1 and October 1 are the two biggest move-in dates in the city.)
