(Mods, if this is in the wrong forum, please move it.)
I make all my own socks. I’m tired of making all my own socks. At least for a while.
All during the 80s and 90s, I wore socks that I bought at the Gap. Standard cotton socks, but in different colors:187 different colors, 100% cotton, 6" above the ankle. I don’t like white socks, I don’t like black socks.
So, to take a break from knitting and darning my socks for a while, I’ve been trying to find a source for such socks online. Apparently, either I’m entirely googletarded, or they don’t make these anymore. ALL kinds of sources for black cotton socks, white cotton socks, or multi-colored, flowered, striped, polka-dotted, whatever, plastic socks. I can’t wear plastic socks, and while I’d sooner wear striped socks than white socks, I’d really prefer solid colors.
A little help here please, from you frooglemeisters? Thanks.
I tried in vain to buy white wool socks, or socks for men with bigger calves, online. Maybe they just don’t make certain socks anymore. All I can suggest is Hanes.com or Vermont Country Store.
I love SmartWool socks. Though they may be a bit warm for those that don’t live in the mountains.
I recently had good luck with a Levis store for cotton socks. They had GREAT socks. I suspect you could get them on line.
(I don’t care too much about socks. That I noticed something in these two brands says a bit. At 48 years old, I can plan my morning with good socks. It never used to mater.)
I assume that you’ve already looked at the Gap.com website but don’t like what you’re seeing there? Because I see solid color socks, although only in a few colors (black, khaki, navy, brown heather).
I buy solid color socks almost exclusively, so they definitely still make them. I usually buy Gold Toe or Nordstrom’s store brand socks, and both are fine (mens’; I don’t know if you’re a man or a woman, but the situation may be completely different for womens’ socks). I’ve never bought those online, but I’d be amazed if at least Gold Toe socks aren’t online somewhere. Amazon has apparel from a bunch of merchants, so that might be a place to start. Lands End probably has socks online too. I will say, socks always seem kind of ridiculously expensive to me.
As for 100% cotton, I’m not sure. I usually try to stick with 100% cotton (or wool, linen, etc.) for my clothing, but to be honest I don’t pay that much attention for socks.
Socks are kind of unisexual, but I imagine the multi-colored cotton sock market for men is pretty limited demographically. Unless you’ve got a very big foot you might want to try stores catering specifically to women.
