I just got a bunch of women’s cotten black socks at Old Navy. I think they were 2 for $5. I wear black and navy suits to work, always with black shoes, and always with black socks. I had many dress socks from Brooks Brothers, but they contained so much nylon they made my feet hot. So I’ve done a ‘sock wardrobe swap.’
Have they stopped their super stupid commercials? I’ve avoided them and their associates for years because their commercials were just painfully mind-numbing …
I found my last pair of plain black socks (anklet, cotton/? blend, a bit more padding on the bottom) in a local Wal-Mart clearance bin. (‘George’ I belive is the brand.) For $0.50 they’ve been great: enough cotton so my foot doesn’t overheat, enough stretchy stuff so it stays put, and so far no fading of color after nearly a year of wear.
I usually get my socks at Hanes/Legg’s/Bali outlets: they’ve got all kinds of styles and sizes for (usually) good prices. Just watch the bulk packs of ’ factory seconds’: normally they merely have cosmetic flaws, but occasionally one with more serious flaws slips by the quality control people. They’ve never given me a problem about exchanging those ones though.

Gods, I wish we still have Mervyns here. I loved their socks. Except for the fact that they were too damn big … but maybe I would have found what I wanted in the boys dept.
Nightsong, yeah, I’ve owned a couple of ‘George’ socks … decent, tan, holding up. But its been a long time since I’ve been to WalMart for different “I think one person can make a difference” reasons.
So, I headed out to Target over the weekend (part of the Mervyns group) and got a pair of large boys socks. Still not mostly cotton, but sturdy and comfortable. For once I don’t look like Michael Jackson walking around the office.
I’ll probably get a couple more pair and use them this summer, then wait for ‘back to school’ sales to find some higher cotton count ones, or keep my eyes peeled for outlet stores.
